3. Cloudy water will usually clear up on its on without drastic water changes. It's mostly not harmful to fish and will clear up naturally without drastic water changes. It's always best to ask a professional before making drastic changes to your tank. We have all learned from our mistakes.

  5. Is there a relation between the PH buffering and quantity of ADA soil. My RO is around 7 so I wasn’t sure how much substrate to use to bring PH down to 6. I have a running CRS tank of 7 gallons which has a ph of 6.2 and i used 6ltrs of ADA version 2. Now i am planning to have multiple tanks and can’t afford to put that much soil in every tank.
  6. Hey y'all! I've made 3 planted aquariums for community fish and shrimp, but I've never had a just shrimp tank. About 3 weeks ago I set up a planted 2.5 gal aquarium. I used some rocks, aquarium sand, and some fluval shrimp substrate. However, there is more sand than substrate (not sure if that will be a problem...). The plants are doing well, and I'm wondering what is the best way to start getting the tank ready for shrimp? I've been reading that some people say to start by adding 2 fish and letting them help cycle it, but then other people say to just add 3 shrimp to start and see how it goes. (but if the tank is pretty new, there won't be much film for the shrimps to eat, so will I have to supplement with other foods?) Many thanks in advance

  12. Yeah YKKs are actually just tangerine tigers that are line bred to have no tiger stripes. At the very least they have tiger genes as do pinto shrimp. Heavily line bred shrimp offspring will sometimes yield types like the first picture, which looks like a wild type to me. Cool looking shrimp though! It's fun to let them do their thing without intervention.
  13. Hello All, Looking for some advice on my Taiwan bee shrimp tank that was once very fruitful and for the past year has seen zero breeding activity and I cannot figure out why. Some background, tank is about 20 gallons and currently home to about 100 shrimp all Taiwan bees. Most born the tank. I started with 18 and the population quickly exploded and then breeding stopped completely after the first generation. Water parameters (RODI with SS GH+) TDS 120 GH 5 KH 0 PH <6 (I only have an API test kit, so it could be below 6 but i can't read it) Temp 71F I use 2 UGF boxes with ADA Amazonia and a thin layer of Amazonia on the base. I switched to this filter strategy some time ago to make it easier to swap soil without completely disturbing the tank. The soil is all 6 months old or less. Some buce and christmas moss for the shrimp to hide in. Malaysian driftwood, alder cones, and almond leaves. I have experimented with different feeding schedules and water changes to try to get them breeding with no luck. When i slowed feeding and upped water changes they started eating eachother, so i've maintained 10% WC every week and now i'm feeding Shrimp King complete, Bacter AE, and Shrimp King Mineral in a rotation every other day. I siphon the gravel when changing water. I'm kind of at a loss, i feel like i'm doing everything right and anytime i change something i lose a couple shrimp. For the most part they are all very active and happy looking, they all eat aggressively when i feed them. I'm not sure what else to try. Maybe they feel they are at a population capacity? In which case i could feed more and start doing WC twice a week. Any help or advice would be appreciated!

  18. I’m having issues with my PH and I really need help. In December I set up a new shrimp tank. It’s an 11 gallon tank. The hardscape is dragon stone and I have a few pieces of nolos wood and one piece of drift wood. The substrate is fluval shrimp and pant. The tank is heavily planted, mostly with Cuba carpet and some vallisneria spiralis. I do not add CO2 but I do add a pump of shrimp safe fertilizer twice a week (Brightwell Aquatics shrimp Florian multi).I do a weekly 10% water change and top off the tank when needed (usually twice a week). The shrimp are fed blanched vegetables, wafers and sometimes bold worms 2-3 times a week. The PH from my tap water is 7.4 and for awhile the tank sat between 7.2 to 7.4. Now it’s consistently 8.0 to 8.2. I’ve tried everything to control the PH and I’m failing miserably. I’ve added more wood and Indian almond leaves but they don’t have an impact. I reduced the aquarium light time and took out my extra air stone but to no avail. The only thing that does help are larger water changes but it doesn’t last long and it agitates the shrimp. I’ve tried smaller daily water changes but that doesn’t help either. I’m hesitant to use PH down because I don’t want the PH to dip too suddenly and I really want to tackle the underlying root cause. My final thought is it might be the dragon stone but I’ve never had issues with dragon stone before and I hear it’s PH neutral. Any advice would be welcome.

As a hobbyist who has been nurturing Crystal Shrimp for three years and has gained a deep understanding of their behavior, I am pleased to announce my intention to commence an experiment in selective breeding this year. I will diligently record the status of my shrimp tank on a weekly basis, and I invite everyone to share their insights and feedback.
  21. Hello! I recently have been looking into getting a small vase or tank about 1 gal to make a no tech ecosystem (no filter, heater ect.) id be using some substrate, sand and plants. Now i might be reaching for the stars here, but I travel a good bit and won't always be home to feed daily, and don't want my critters to be living off feeder blocks while im gone. Im wondering about some fish I can keep happy in a tank that size, anything i could use as another food option aside from feed blocks. Also Ive never kept shrimp or snails and I don't know much about either, are they necessary for a small ecosystem tank like this or am I able to keep only fish? can I keep all three? and if I need snails what type for a small tank where i dont want over population? Thanks!
  22. This is a duplicate post. Moderators please delete. I was having issues posting and didn't think that it posted the first time. Thank you. Hi!, I'm new to Shrimp Spot, but I've been keeping fish for 13 years. Over that time I've successfully kept various fish. Some of my original fish are still alive and well after more than a decade. I've tried shrimp on 4 occasions with no success. I've been to other forums seeking help, but to no avail. Like with fish keeping, there are a million opinions and anecdotes, but people with the exact tank conditions as me have good success with shrimp... I've tried keeping shrimp 4 times in 2 different mature (established for years) planted tanks: amano shrimp twice, ghost shrimp and Neocaridina davidi. They all start out as what I consider normal. They are active, eating, and "look good." They are all dead within 10 days and start dying on day one. Once I was able to keep a couple amanos alive for a 2-3 months. Prior to dying, they appear and act normally, working their way around the tank grazing etc. Then they are dead with no obvious physical or behavioral signs of health issues. I drip acclimate 1-2 hours upon arrival. Temp: 74-5 F KH: 4dKH GH: 4dGH pH: 7.5 TDS: unknown These tanks receive a 50% weekly water change. Shrimp seem fine after the changes. Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 5ppm prior to water change. Never have used any medication in these tanks I've added no metalic plant weights All hardscape (rocks and wood) and plants are natural. Substrate in both of these tanks is Eco Complete One of the 2 tanks is lightly fertilized (Thrive C). The other received no ferts. ( the amanos and cherry shrimp were in unfertilized tank). Parameters the same in both tanks. Other inhabitants are nano fish and snails( Rams Horn, Bladder, Nerite) The shrimp were sourced from 4 different suppliers. I must buy online because shrimp and snails cannot be sold in my state Tom Barr thinks it's due to copper pipes in the house plumbing, but surely other people have copper pipes and are able to keep shrimp. Also my pH is not acidic, so I would think copper leaching would be minimal. If I test for copper, what level of copper is too high for shrimp? Plus, I do keep snails... I've had shrimp keepers tell me that shrimp need small infrequent water changes. I've had others say they thrive with large water changes. I've been told they can die if they eat too much food, but I'm skeptical of that, especially since they start dying immeadiately. Do shrimp really over eat to the point of killing themselves? I'm doubtful. I haven't given up. I have an empty 5 gal I'd like to dedicate to shrimp, but I am thinking of giving up and simply adding a couple dozen chili rasboas (not in the 5 gal) in place of cherry shrimp. Your advice, comments and opinions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

  24. I read somewhere that just before shrimp molt, they become very inactive. I think it's for several hours. The proof of this, which I haven't seen yet, would be if the same shrimp disappear for a couple days then reappear.
  25. Hi all, just wondering if anyone could give me a hand in identifying what type of worm this is? The photo/video is taken on my phone with the 3x zoom camera as the worms are tiny. thanks James
  26. I’ve looked everywhere and just can’t seem to find anyone that sells and ships them to me 🥲. I would love to set up a neo tank with a UGF but can’t find any.
  27. Hello, So, I have pintos that I have been keeping for years... They are mixed (black and red), with different patterns, and they used to breed insanely before. I think at one point, their numbers were close to a 1,000, so I had to keep rehoming them. However, for this year, they just keep dropping the eggs and I have no idea what the reason is... They do get berried and I see them fanning quite often, but they drop their eggs pretty soon after a few days or weeks. The thing is, I have another tank right beside the pinto tank, which started out with EBBs (but bad strain so now it's a mixture of light BBs ~ EBBs), and they are still consistently breeding. They have the same plants, same substrate (ADA Amazonia, although pinto's substrate is like a year older), same water, same salty shrimp gH+, almost the same TDS, sitting in the same room, similar temp, same food... I kinda stopped measuring the parameters since last summer, because they have been staying consistently at: pH ~6.0 (ADA Amazonia) gH ~5~6 kH <1 TDS 100~120 (when it comes time to top up or change water, it becomes around 120). temp ~ 22C ammonia 0 nitrite 0 some nitrate -- I would have to re-measure them again, but both tanks have been staying at these levels for a longgg time. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated... Why are they dropping their eggs all the time...? :(
