  1. Mine do the same thing! They go to the top and seem to purposely play in the current. I'm amazed at how they can easily get out of the current. I thought this was happening by accident and they were being bothered by the current but I beg and thinking it was on purpose. I'm not sure a snail is intelligent but I think it has its preferences. They just seem happy and playful.
  2. Oh wow. Silly LFS. I think I may have some to sell in the future. I bought six from alphaprobreeders and all have done well. They are beautiful.
  3. I never thought I would have fish tanks. I have one. I never thought I'd have a planted shrimp tank. I now have two. And I NEVER thought I would EVER be interested in snails. I'm fascinated. I've been mesmerized at how my pink ramshorn snails will jump off a leaf or piece of moss. They just float to the next thing. So carefree.
  4. As a small tank keeper (3G JBJ Picotope), I have to be diligent with testing, water levels and maintenance. I have no experience with large tanks, but what I have are three nano's and they require a good amount of TLC. I enjoy it. When our children get older, we will do larger tanks out in the house. So for now, nano.
  5. I'm curious how you keep the white to stay white? I have a 1.5 year old tank and the white substrate is no longer white, but yellow brown. I was thinking of adding a couple MTS to the tank to see if they could clean it up, but not sure. I don't even remember what the substrate is actually. It is inert. It's my son's community tank.
  6. I don't need the shrimp, but wishing you well wishes with IVF. We've been down that road and it is NOT easy. Hang in there!
  7. That's what I have. For some reason, tying it more securely made the difference. Go figure.
  8. Good to know. I did a large water change tonight and I added less LK's GHMB and my TDS is now 134. I have another tank and I like them meticulously clean so the algae and diatoms are driving me crazy. I'm forcing myself not to mess with it and wait for the shrimp and snails to clean it up. Mine will be a Taiwan Bee tank. I've really enjoyed your journal and have learned a lot. I've got two 3 gallon JBJ Picotopes (shrimp tanks) and a 5 gallon Fluval Chi (my son's little community tank). I want to get a large tank for our family room once the kids are a little older. Keep sharing your progress. Thanks for your response.
  9. Before adding shrimp, did you have the algae/diatoms? I have all of that after 5 weeks of cycling ADA soil. I am about to go on a week long trip so I am waiting to add shrimp. Anyway, what did you see your TDS at before adding shrimp? I'm using RO/DI water remineralized to GH5 with Lowkeys GH Mineral Balance x4 and keep getting TDS levels around 160-170.
  10. So I went back through each phase. This is the third round. Not one phase really shed light, but I noticed the pre filter wasn't tied on as tight as it once had been. I use a thin plastic wire that I had for stringing beads. Anyway, I grabbed a new pre-filter just because and tied it super tight. Problem solved. I feel somewhat foolish for not seeing it the first round. KISS principle for sure. Lots of lessons learned in tank keeping. Thanks for the help everyone.
