Sale should be on now. I just got an e-mail about it. I'm annoyed because I just bought some tanks last week. Not that I have room, but I did just buy some extra versa-tops since I found some on sale, so I may pick up some 10s.

I use Ebo Jager heaters. The only other one I have as a Tetra one that is already pre-set. Controllers are a must, if you really prize you aquatic pets. They add an extra layer of protection when it comes to maintaining parameters.

Someone here had an idea to drain most of the water, then fit a piece of sponge material (think HMF) over the water to prevent it from sloshing around so much. The last time I moved my tanks, I drained everything but an inch of water, moved all the plants, filters, and decorations to buckets, then left the shrimp in the tanks. They were 5.5 gallon tanks with braces, so I didn't worry to much about supporting them too much, aside from cardboard. As far as I know, I didn't lose any shrimp, but since your collection is so fancy, you should probably be more cautious. If I could, I would set up brand new tanks, cycle them, then move the shrimp over. I'm always looking for more reasons to buy tanks though... Catching shrimp isn't fun, especially when the babies are at risk of being flushed away. I would probably catch/trap as many as possible in the weeks prior to the move, then move them to breeder boxes until it's time to take apart the tank. The last tank I moved took about an hour to catch all of the shrimp.

seaj replied to SportsRoad's topic in The Marketplace
I just saw this great deal on eBay. 6 baby yellow rabbit snails with shipping for $25. Kinda bummed because I purchased a package of 5 from the same seller for $10 more. I haven't gotten them get, but I've purchased ramshorns and mystery snails from this seller before. Mine are being shipped out today. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SALE-5-1-Baby-Golden-Yellow-rabbit-Snails-FREE-SHIP-/162488212844?hash=item25d50d5d6c:g:jCMAAOSwzqFY9tcc This seller is also selling baby rabbit snails. http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwsnails&1493594405 -

how big of an airpump for HMF?
seaj replied to SSJChar's topic in Filtration, lighting and other equipment
The 20 gallon long HMF kit from Swiss Tropicals comes with the large jetlifter The large jetlifter can pump 700 to 800 liters of water per hour, or 11.66 to 13.33 liters per minute. To achieve that flow, you need an air pump that can pump 2.92 to 3.33 liters of air per minute, or 178 to 203 cubic inches, since the water to air volume is ~4:1. There's 61 cubic inches in a liter. The Danner AP-4 is suppose to pump 275 cubic inches of air per minute, so it should be perfect. That total is probably for both outlets combined. It has two outlets, but you can connect them with a T connector, and it's adjustable so you can turn it down. I have the same HMF from Swiss Tropicals, and I find that running it at full power produces too much of a current. I also have an Danner AP-4, but I'm not using it right now. I hope that math is correct. -
how big of an airpump for HMF?
seaj replied to SSJChar's topic in Filtration, lighting and other equipment
I have a danner air pump, and it's nice because it comes with a dial to adjust the air pressure. Not sure if all models have that. I think I heard somewhere that that the jetlifters pump out 4 times the the amount of water in relation to how much air you pump in. 20 longs aren't very deep, and jetlifters are crazy effective. I have one in a 20 long, and it blows my guppies around. -
Good to hear! One of the things I love about lower grade shrimp and rili shrimp is being able to see what's going on in their bodies. Just be careful not to overfeed, maybe 1 brine shrimp per adult shrimp to start. I don't think they should need brine shrimp more than twice a week.

Not sure if this is a local thing, but can anyone else confirm what tanks are available at your stores? It seems the sale in now limited to 10, 20, and 29 gallon tanks.

Super tempting! Have you gotten anything special out of your Tangtais?

Hopefully others will chime in. Feeding brine shrimp doesn't seem common, but my shrimp fight over it whenever I put some in the tank. I don't even think I have ever read of others doing the same, but it works for me. On this thread, this user recommends blood worms when breeding slows down. I tried blood worms once, but they grossed me out, haha. I think I may have also read that breeding can slow down when active substrates start to wear out.

I find that frozen brine shrimp is a great breeding stimulant for both my neos and caridinas. It must provide them something that is lacking in their regular dried food diet that I give them. I give them some when I feed my guppies. I get lazy sometimes, so my tanks get neglected to the point that they don't even saddle up. A few feedings of brine shrimp later, and they all saddle/berry at the same time. Your GH could be a touch lower. Most reccomend GH between 4 and 6, though your strain may already be adapted to your parameters

I can already tell this is gonna be awesome. I love the idea of automation when it comes to caring for tank inhabitants. I don't currently automate anything other than the lights and a few heaters, but I want to get some auto feeders for my guppies. If anything, my next step for my shrimp is to get a simple temperature controller for a heater and fan. I wish you lived closer. I've been wanting something to house my big Alita air pump to cut down on the noise, but keep it cool at the same time, since all of tanks are in my bedroom.

Double sponge filters
seaj replied to fernselvis's topic in Filtration, lighting and other equipment
I use a toothbrush to clean out my air lift tubes as well from Swiss Tropicals, which look like they have a similar design. -
Jealous! All my plans to get some of those pintos fell through. What else is in the tank?
