  1. She's swimming the way everywhere. So weird. 20170106_102119_1_1.mp4
  2. This morning she's acting very strange. She is rapidly swimming all over her tank, but its at an angle. She's either upside or face up the whole time. I was just watching her a moment ago, and she even landed on her back and flailed a while until she was able to get back up into the water. She's acting very distressed. Is this what they do when they kick off the eggs? She seems to be have less attached to her than she did last night. Will update post with video in a second.
  3. Thank you for help but are you sure you are talking about the shrimp I have? There are multiple shrimp identified as "glass" or "ghost" shrimp, that range from freshwater only (What I have, from what I know?) to brackish or saltwater species. Wouldn't Palamonetes paludosus species die in brackish or salt water? I have had friends that have had successful breeding in fresh water tanks so I am rather confused about your statement. (One had so many she started feeding them to her cichlid..) I really am not convinced these eggs will hatch, is it possible after so long? I will try to get a picture for proper species identification and show the eggs. She still often fans them and is happily munching on anything she can find in her tank so she doesn't seem stressed.
  4. Female passed away this morning. I found her swimming upside down or straight up, did a 30% water change (perimeters were all 0). She had about 50% of the eggs on her still at this point. 4 hours later she was dead, no eggs on her. I'm guessing she had a bad molt. I'm going to keep the tank up just in the slight case there are shrimp larva in it but I very much doubt there are. Any input on what may have happened (with the eggs or the mama) would be appreciated. I started out my shrimping ventures with 8 ghost shrimp, from 2 different stores. I lost 2 in a week but the rest were doing great. Molting, growing and eating like little pigs. I'd check the tank regularly and monitor the ammonia levels. I finally ended up finding a berried ghost shrimp the week before Thanksgiving. I had another tank set up, with a sponge filter, ready to go and moved the berried shrimp into the other tank. (they were set up and treated the exact same way so that the water chemistry wouldn't be a shock to her) At this point the eggs were tiny green blobs right up by her abdomen so I knew it was early on. 2 weeks in her eggs had swelled a bit, turned slightly translucent and I had hopes this was a good sign. That's where all egg changes seemed to stop. She STILL has the eggs attached to her. Are they viable by any chance? Or will she eventually remove them and give up this venture? I read that "gestation" for these eggs is upwards of 21 days as we have far surpassed this. She has an air stone (I read they need moving water to kick the larva into) , fully planted 2.5 gallon tank, and sponge filter. What the heck is going on with this shrimp? Can "gestation" last this long?
  5. Thanks so much everyone! I ended up talking to the owner of the company that takes care of our well system. He said the TDS on our water is incredibly high and it will have salt used to treat the system in it. (You can taste it, its the reason we got the RO system). Our water is also very soft, due to the treatment process. (Trying to shower in this water is a nightmare when you aren't used to feeling "soapy" even when clean.) I also talked to him about the water produced by the RO and found out that the system re-mineralizes the water. So I've opted to use this, coupled with Prime (just to be on the safe side..). Our water is also testing between 7.0 and 7.4 in PH. In my established 2.5 tank, that's always used the RO water, it tests at 7.0 consistently. I think the leaf litter and calcium rocks help stabilize this? Its an ugly brown water, but I'll take ugly over non-habitable. Coming out of the RO system, the water was ranging widely but after changing the RO system filters (which were completely clogged) the PH seems to be 7.0 or 7.2.
  6. I'm starting up a 10 gallon planted tank (low tech) for shrimps and a small tetra school. I live in an area where we get well water, and will have to use this for my tank. It's treated with a salt system, and I know very little about this. (I moved here a year ago, and had public water before that). We do have a reverse osmosis system attached to the sink that gives us 2 gallons of water, filtered, at a time. Is it necessary to use this water (or bad, for that matter.. wondering if it removes the nutrients) or can I use the normal well water? Are there any tests I need to run to check for possible issues? It would be so much easier to use the water from the well vs the filtration system. Any help or concerns regarding this would be appreciated!
  7. Thank you so much to everyone who replied to this post! I've got a list of plants to hunt down! I will be making it my mission to get plants to stock my tank tomorrow.. lets hope shipping doesn't cost more than the plants! LOL I will post pictures of the results once I get it done. @TheGlassBox Yes that is the bulb! I figured I'd need to put in a "Plant" bulb, it just came with the fixture I got. LEDs intimidated me, I'm so used to florescent. I will venture into 2016 (almost 17..) soon enough, for now I'll hunt down a good bulb.
  8. Thank you so so much for all the info! I will definitely ask members once my tank is cycled. The only experience I have with shrimp is ghost shrimp, so I definitely want a hardy breed of shrimp to start, but some color would be nice. Its very annoying trying to find the darned ghost shrimp! Thank you again!
  9. Great thanks! I have at least a month to cycle the tank so I can stalk the form until then lol. Now to decide what breed shrimp to put in my tank!
  10. I'm about to start a 10 gallon tank and doing research on everything before I jump in both feet. (About to start the cycle process) I've found many many sites that sell shrimp for varying prices. I'm looking to get some Neocardina, not sure yet if I'll get the cherrys (most likely) but am looking to see a reputable place that sells them reasonably priced. I'd love the blue ones but they are so expensive! I understand they cant be put in with cherrys or you risk them breeding bland color fry? Are there any colors of Neo that can be mixed without risk of breeding? I also have a fry tank set up, but I'd prefer to keep color lines pure. Thanks!
  11. Thanks Chappy! I will check out that link. I'd like to get a package of plants that all require the same light. Will the full spectrum light bulb be okay for plants to thrive? Its the aqueon full spectrum t8. I'm planning to set up the tank with about 1/2 water to let the light penetrate more to the plants for a week or so, then let the tank run another couple weeks to cycle and establish. I have some dwarf baby tears in my 2.5 nano and its not doing well, does it require high light?
  12. I'm planning to start a 10g tank. I'm thinking of aiming to be a low tech, heavily planted tank for cherry shrimps and possibly some small schooling fish like tetra. I purchased a florescent hood that has a "full spectrum" light with it, can I use this? Or would I be better to use one of the bulbs specifically for plants? I'm planning to use black sand substrate, I've read some information saying to put peat or dirt under it first.. Can I get away with not doing this? Will the plants be okay in just sand? I also am going to use sponge filters and a bubble wall. What plants do you suggest that are low maintenance and healthy for cherrys? I'm thinking... Foreground : Java Moss, Dwarf baby tears(though it seems to not like my 2.5) or hair grass Midground: Java Fern, Dwarf Lily (Nymphaea Rubra) background: Anubias (not sure what variety) ,amazon sword? I also found a "plant" pack of 12, http://www.aquariumplants.com/12-Plant-Assortment-Hardy-Low-Light-p/ashll.htm .. thoughts on this would be appreciated. Or others you could recommend. Thanks so much! Finding information is so frustrating on looking it up, every site says something different so I thought I'd go straight to the people whom I can talk to!
