  1. Help, 40 litre tank has a ich (ichthyophtyirius multifiliis) / white spot outbreak. We've been able to separate the few surviving neon tetra into an emergency quarantine tank, with appropriate medicine for the fish. We had done this as we had noticed the issue practically too late as we miss identified the white spots as cotton mouth (which the tetra also have). We luckily quarantined the fish from the tank as the ich reached its second stage as most have matured and abandoned the fish. This has become an issue as even if the neon tetra do not survive the treatment, I cannot re-add them to the tank and I don't want to keep the tank's environment full of parasites. Thankfully ich seem to not be able to effect the shrimp but the medicine we have for them is toxic to the shrimp and the plants in the tank, hence the separating of the neon tetra. I was wondering if there was anything I can do to the tank while the shrimp are still in the tank, as removing them isn't a viable option. We've been trying to get the temp of the tank to 30C and leaving it at that temp for an hour, however the tank's heater is verry slow and doesn't seem to be going up past 27C. From what I've searched 30C should kill of the ich without irritating the bloody mary shrimp too much (too many websites vary their recommended temp, so i wouldn't keep it above 28C long if we were able to get it that high) If anyone knows if there are any ich treatments or methods of killing ich that are safe for invertebrates and potentially plants I would love if they could suggest one.
  2. Hi, today I've noticed this specific shrimp hanging on to the floating plant today. It was there when I fed the fish at 7:30, still there when I came home at 1pm and is still there as I'm posting. There is a second smaller shrimp, it was there when I got back, but is moving between the plants. Yesterday we did a water change with some medicine for cotton mouth for the neon tetra in the tank, so it might be that that is causing the shrimp to be irritated. Water tests seem to come up fine but the test kit we have isn't easy to understand. Otherwise I'm unsure why these shrimp are doing this. other shrimp seem to be fine, with the biggest one swimming and moving about as they usually do. Would love if anyone knows why they would be doing this? IT WAS THE MEDICINE. phenoxyethanol can make fish and shrimp drowsy and a bit sluggish. May have even irritated the ma bit due to not removing the carbon from the filter, not allowing the medicine to work properly.
  3. 10 + 1 for $44.99 and $15 USPS Priority shipping. Home raised, disease free. I've been culling the colony for about 5 years. PM me if interested! -Sharon
  4. Hi, two questions First off is anyone working with a rili strain of bloody mary shrimp? In one of my tanks there are 4 or 5 juveniles with a band of clear through the middle third of the body like a rili and nice strong solid bloody mary pigment everywhere else... am going to isolate and work with them. I have a few tanks of bloody mary shrimp I am playing with and about to move the best to a new tank then cull. I am wondering if there is a standard for this variety regarding back stripe? I have one very old female with a stripe that is complete and several females with partials, but in photos I see bloody mary shrimp with no stripes. I am inclined to steer away from them esthetically, is that the goal others are shooting for or should I go for the full stripes? Full stripes make the shrimp look duller to me. I am googling "Shrimp show judging criteria" hoping to find what is used internationally, I was trained to judge another species and know these documents exist but am not yet finding anything, if anyone knows where one is let me know please Thanks, Kate
  5. I'm not sure if this is the correct area to post this if not please move it. I am relatively new to keeping shrimp but I am experienced in raising and breeding both freshwater and saltwater fish. I recently purchased a quantity of "Bloody Mary" shrimp at an auction and I noticed that there are a few shrimp that are significantly darker than the others. From the picture would the shrimp in the center be "black" or just a real dark red? Also would this be considered to be a desirable trait? Thank you for your help/responses
  6. Hey! I'm new to the hobby. I have a tank that's been live cycling with a couple white cloud mountain minnows for a while. I'm still having a struggle with chloramines, but once that's dealt with and the minnows go back to my lfs (Forest Lake Pets) I am gonna move on to setting up my tank. Here's the skinny of it: 26gal bowfront, Aqueon Quietflow 30 (I think), got some tasty gunk building up on the glass and driftwood, pretty solid flow and aeration, temp unregulated right now for the minnows' sake. My vision is to turn this into a pretty low-tech planted aquarium. Seachem Flourite Black substrate, hair grass carpet, moss on the driftwood centerpiece, and taller background plants (yet to be determined), and some sweet little stones (or marimo moss balls if the light is good enough). Black background on it too. I want to have this lush green/black palette with some fantastic red shrimps living in it. I just want to have a colony of red shrimps that breed true for the most part. I don't feel excited about aggressively culling them all. They don't have to be extremely hardy-- I am still probably gonna wait about a month to plant it and make sure I've figured out how to do my water changes. That's about it. Red shrimps. Low cull rate. Preferably something that won't keel over dead at the drop of 0.1 pH-- I'm definitely a beginner. Stripes/patterns are cool as long as the red shows up strong in the adult offspring. Any species that fit this ok? (Price isn't too important, I'm buying all this spread out enough that my savings will survive the colony starters. Unless I kill them. In that case I'm probably gonna give up and grab some tetras and perhaps a different invert.)
  7. Hey guys, I have been keeping a Yellow Golden Back Shrimp, and although they do mostly well; However, I was wondering if there is a very strict, ideal water parameter for keeping and breeding these shrimps. In addition, I've set up a new crs tank and a bloody mary tank, and I was wondering what the Ideal water parameter for that would be too. These are what I'd like to know: For both Neocaridina and Caridina Temperature, pH, gh/kh TDS Also, what is the best chance of increasing the survival rate? I have been having offsprings, but I feel that less than 20% make it to adulthood.
  8. Before starting off this thread, I want to give a huge shout out to the support team at shrimpspot for fixing my username! Well first things first, My name is Justin, and I am very new to the shrimp world. I have a 5.5 gallon tank right now, that is in need of a upgrade. So, after countless hour of research on which tank to buy, I have decided on the 12 gallon long by Mr Aqua. I decided to hop on craigslist (shot in the dark) but I actually found a guy in North Jersey (about 2 hours and 45 minutes away) that has one. So January 31, 2016 I set off to New Jersey to pick up the tank. When I arrived in NJ the first sight of the tank, you would not believe how big of a smile I had on my face. The guy was really nice the only thing that needed to be done is a little clean up! Later that night after getting back, I decided to start the whole cleaning of the tank process. So, I filled it up with hot water, and decided to eat dinner and watch my Hockey team while letting the tank soak (you probably already know where this is going.) After about 1.5 hours I heard a really loud bang, yes, a large crack right down the front of the aquarium. Here is a picture of the tragedy. Because I could never find a new one, I decided to try and repair this one. I started searching for glass and I could not believe it but I found a company that still sells the Mr Aqua 12 gallon long low iron for only 115... (There goes the 60 I threw on the old one). Well I ordered the new one and the tank looks amazing! I really want to go with the Iwagumi style, but after much thought I have decided to go with a driftwood setup, using Manzanita wood (Ohko Stone/Dragon stone is very expensive). Anyways I found a company Bloom & Branches who had just what I needed at a really decent price (pre sandblasted). When the wood arrived I couldn't have asked for a better set. Here is the one I will be using in my tank (I bought these prior to seeing how big the actual tank is so I will have to cut them a little. Here is the wood sitting in the tank: I really like the look of it hanging out but I think if I cut the top section off it would be the perfect height and look amazing sitting in the tank. Anyways, I was looking up good substrate and decided to go with Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum, I only bought a 17.6 pound bag so I think I will need another bag to get the 2.5 inch to 3 Inch I am looking for. Now, after more research I also chose to use BorneoWild (BW) products and purchased the following. I did not buy the Bebi and shrimp food from there (that card on the bottom), but no one I couldnt find had the Bebi. Also, I guess I accidentally added two of the Enlives, but Im not worried about it. Im sure I can use it eventually. I also, picked up a Aqueon Pro 100 submersible heater that I will be using in the tank as well. So right now this is where I am stuck. I have a couple air stones that I will be running in this tank, as well as using dual sponge filters. Anyways, here is my 5.5 gallon tank that I mentioned earlier. I have Cherry Shrimp and Bloody Mary Shrimp, as well as a Super red cherry in there (he was my original). I keep losing shrimp though which is why I am setting up a new tank. Here is my old/current setup lol. Before: After: Current Setup. As you can see I have horned nerite snails as well. (They lay white eggs all over the place, which I hate). Now the pictures of the shrimp. Here is my original shrimp that I have had for 6 months. When I bought them (local fish store, had to order) he told me he was a super red cherry. Bought 5, only one left... My next order: about 20 shrimp This was my pregnant girl... For some reason I have a death every other day it seems. She was one of them. She was shipped pregnant to me. Bloody Mary Shrimp: 12. I just ordered these but they are still fairly small, and dont have good pictures yet. Plants in the tank: Dwarf Baby Tears (carpet) Anubias Nana (floating as I have no idea what to do with, thought you could plant them) Java moss (got with shrimp grows like crazy!) Going to attach this to my drift wood with fishing line when setting up. I dont have a RODI system (cant afford) so I will be using distilled water. I have a CO2 setup for it but still haven't used it since filled because I thought that was killing the shrimp which doesnt seem to be it. Any info/help would be great!
  9. http://imgur.com/a/DdOYz So I had a family of BM that had offspring and theyve grown up. However, as they don't breed true, I'm at the stage of moving the rejects to another tank. This female and 2 other females have a very deep clearish red to them which looks awesome. However, the rostrum seems a bit longer than the other BMs that I have. Can anyone more familiar with these guys take a loot at the pics and provide an ID? Thanks,
