  1. Hello! Sorry in advance for the long post - I wanted to include as much information as possible! I have been battling with shrimp loss and I just can't figure out why. Initially, I thought it was Nitrates - those came into check and now everything is stable. But the shrimp keep dying... 1-2 a DAY. Usually overnight. Tank has been set up for 6 months, 2 of which have been shrimp-only. Was originally cycled with, and intended for, fish… until I fell in love with shrimp! I don’t see any signs of planaria, hydra, parasites or illness in them – one day they are foraging and acting normal, the next they are dead. I did receive one shrimp in my shipment that appeared to have ellobiopsidae, and she is quarantined. There are some shrimplets in the tank, and one berried rili. I would appreciate any help or advice! Here are the parameters: Temp: 75.6 PH: 6.6 Ammonia: 0 Nitrites: 0 Nitrates: 2 TDS: 124 KH: 2 GH: 4 Copper: Negative Phosphates: 0 Inhabitants (only a few of each kind): Red & Black Crystal Shrimp Zebra Babaulti Shrimp Green Babaulti Shrimp Blue Bolt Shrimp Orange & Blue Rili Shrimp Golden Back Yellow Shrimp Tiger Eye Nerite Snails Tank plants: Water Sprite Cabomba Caroliniana Duckweed Salvinia Red & Green Myriophyllum Anubias Weeping Moss Flame Moss Riccia Fluitans Bucephalandra (Theia Green, Lagoon, Kedagang Mini, Belindae) Golden Creeping Jenny Creeping Charlie Marimo Moss Balls Hydrocotyle Tripartita 'Japan' Tank décor & Substrate: Mopani Driftwood Dragon Ohko Stone Fluval Plant & Shrimp Stratum Egg crate supports Black aquarium gravel to fill in under the supports Supplements & Food: Tourmaline Mineral Balls SunGrow Mineral Rocks Alder Cones Mohka Pod Hikari Shrimp Cuisine (1-2x/week) Hikari Crab Cuisine (1-2x/week) BacterAE (1-2x/week) Water: Tap water, conditioned & allowed to sit out for 48+ hours Aqueon Shrimp Tank Plus Conditioner (Previously Seachem Prime) Aqueon Shrimp Essentials Trace Minerals Setup: Aqueon 15 Gallon Column tank Aqueon QuietFlow 10 LED Pro Filter Added Seachem Matrix 12” air stone across back of tank
  2. Hi Everyone, I am new here and fairly new to the world of freshwater shrimps. One month ago, I decided to start-up a shrimp tank using my old 20 gallon aquarium. I started working on DIY stand and buying aquarium items (black sand, sponge filter, cholla wood, alder pines, and almond leaves). Now, the tank is in cycling process. My plan is to have caridinas (Blue Bolts<-definitely and Tigers <- don't know yet which type) and Neocaridinas (red cherries and blue dream). I am debating if I should purchase a RO system or just buy distilled/deionized water from somewhere (e.g. Walmart). Capital cost for 20 gallon distilled water should not break my wallet. However, operating cost might be - water change. I don't know how often I would need to do water change for a 20 gallon shrimp tank. Assuming I would do 25% water change, that will be 5 gallons of water. On the other hand, I do weekly water change for my 75 gallon freshwater tank. My 20 gallon tank is currently have dechlorinated tap water. I don't want to blabber to much. I kindly ask for your opinions and advice. I made few mistakes before being cheap and I want to make things right this time to prevent wasting time and spending more money due to mistakes.

  4. Update: Sorry about the pictures guys! I re up-loaded them and hopefully this will work. Hey Shrimpspot members! My name is Min, and I’m having my first shrimp sale! (Link to my introduction if anyone wants to read: http://www.shrimpspot.com/index.php?/topic/7355-hello-from-new-york/ ) I have a few shrimp packages available at the moment. As this is my first sale ever, I wanted to do a big sale so the members of this forum can get to know me and trust the shrimp that I’m selling. (to the three members that I’ve already sold to, I’ll contact you ASAP to either give you some money back, or add extra shrimp to the deal. I definitely do not want my first customers to be left out of this deal ) The shrimp I have are limited, so if there is a case if the shrimp unexpectedly dies, or I feel that its health isn't optimal for sale, I'll be sure to inform you prior to shipment to prevent any dead or less than wanted shrimp for arriving, and to reduce the price of the package. Water Parameters that I keep them in is: · pH: 6.2 · gH: 2-3 · kHL 0-1 · temperature: 74 degrees · TDS: 145 These are the packages left: Red Pinto Package: 3 Red Pinto Shrimps (2 Zebra 1 Belly) + 1 Free Black Pinto (Zebra) = $100.00 (SOLD) Blue Panda Package: 12 Shrimps (Mix of Blue King Kong and Blue Panda) + 2 Free Blue Shrimp (either S Grade Blue Bolt, Steel Blue, or Blue Mosura)= $65.00 (0 Available) Blue Package: 12 Shrimps (Mix of S Grade Blue Bolt, Blue Mosura, Steel Blue, and >90% Blue Bolt) + 1 Free Black Pinto (Zebra) = $120.00 (1 Available) (Note: Nothing of lower quality blues will be sent (such as Blue Panda and A Grade Blue Bolt) Additional Package Added: 4 Blue Shrimp (Mix of S Grade Blue Bolt, Blue Mosura, Steel Blue) + 6 Blue Panda Shrimp + 2 Additional Blue = $80.00 (1 Available) Shipping: Shipping will be done through Fedex. I’ve decided not to do any regular shipping options, as I feel that packages with living creatures should be shipped and received as soon as possible. All shrimp are planned to be shipped next Wednesday. Please inform me of the weather conditions in your area, so I can add appropriate heat pack or cold pack. Fedex Two Days: $22.00 Fedex Overnight: $33.00 DOA Policy: I’ll be sure to package as safely as possible to prevent any DOAs from arriving. However, if DOA occurs I’ll be sure to refund the cost right away through Paypal (or add the shrimp to orders in the future) if picture of the shrimp in its original container is sent within 2 hours of receiving the shrimp on its first attempt. Please message me for questions and to buy. Thank you very much! Here are the pictures of my shrimp;

  6. Hey all, I have finally gotten a TB only tank up and running with a handful of blue bolts, shadow pandas and a few red bolts and goldens. When I got some of my BB in I noticed this one right away and was curious if this is categorized as a BB or pushes into the blue steel realm? Keep in mind this coloration was after acclimation and being in the tank only a few minutes. Now the white tail is very bold and the blue markings are strong but still just the same split. (lights off Ill snag a current picture tomorrow) Moving forward which females should I try and breed him with the strengthen the line?
  7. Hi, First post here but I've been into shrimp for a while. I manage a LFS and have quite a few personal tanks as well. I decided to experiment with tangerine tiger crosses and think I might have had some luck. After several generations of crossing I have managed to produce orange shrimp with white lines of which ~25% have the orange eyes of OEBTs. This project is still very early on but I was very excited to see the orange eyes pop up with this newest batch of babies. Here are a couple pictures of my personal fish room and pictures of a couple of the parents and offspring.

  11. Hey SS. Decided to move my shrimp journal here. The other website isn't really a community anymore (not since you guys all moved here) so I decided to make things easier and just post here. With TapaTalk, I find myself always posting on here anyways. This journal is to share my experience with photography, shrimp keeping, and general knowledge. I keep a lot of shrimps, so I didn't want to make too many post so consolidating everyone I own into a single thread is simple. This will compose pictures and setups of all my shrimp stuff. Those familiar with me on the other website should already know I keep Taiwan Bees. Specifically, I keep Pandas, Shadows, Blue Bolts, Extremes, BKK, Red Wines, Ruby Reds, Dragon Wines, etc. There's too many morphs of Taiwan Bees to know. I also keep PRL including Xin/Feather PRL, and Nishiki PRL. Future plans is to finish my semi-rack at my parents. Things are cooling down now and I'm buying a few cooling supplies to help endure the hotter summers to come. Just got some stuff so I'll try my best to update with photos of what I have. Mainly, I want to post pictures of shrimps and develop my photography skills. Any tip on taking macro photography is greatly appreciated! Anyhow, here's a photo of a Blue Bolt.

  13. Hi all, Although Blue Bolt is marketed as deeper blue as higher grade, when you look at their price, it is not really much difference. This is due to the shade of blue is subjective and different people may like different color. As such, I would like to create a poll to find out everyone's preference on the shade of blue on blue bolt. For the picture of different shades of blue, you can see them here: http://www.shrimpydaddy.com/2014/06/which-shade-of-blue-bolt-do-you-prefer.html

  18. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a food or mineral that can increase the color of blue bolt shrimp. I recently bought some high grade blue bolts and they seem very healthy but lost a little color after having them for a month or so. I have noticed the same problem with blue bolts i have bred myself. I keep them in ro water with salty shrimp gh+. They are fed a variety of high quality fresh and commercial food including binibachi gold and borneo wild grow.The picture is what it looked like when i first got it now it is showing some white on the back half. Thanks

It is a specially selected growth media for mycelia. Mycelia is the vegetative part of fungi that generates nutritive components such as crude protein, amino acid, crude fat, crude cellulose and polysaccharide, all of which are important for shrimp growth and well being. Even though the shrimps are attracted immediately when it is introduced into the tank, it is perfectly normal to have white flakes left over. These "snowflakes" do not pollute water and will serve as a medium for mycelia to grow. As a result there will be a constant source of food for the shrimps for weeks (depending on the amount dosed and the amount of livestock), thus making it to suitable to be used as a food supplement during holiday periods. It is high in amino acids, natural vitamins and minerals, for health, growth, colourfulness and good reproduction of the animals. Shrimps are omnivores and as such they also need animal proteins, which they usually find in mostly invisible microorganisms and microbes in the substrate. In order to grant a sufficient supplies of such microbes, Takayuki Shirakura developed the rearing feed » Chi Ebi, which serves as a nutrition basis not only for baby shrimps but also for microorganisms and thus support a healthy development of the population. These little helpers furthermore dispose of feed residues and excrements of the shrimps which lie deeper down the substrate and thus clean the substrate. If feed residues and excrements are not removed, shrimps may die from the evolving poisonous substances. Baby shrimps are particularly at risk. This is the reason why Ebi Dama feed by Shirakura has a very firm consistency. It will not fall apart during feeding and sink down to the floor unused. In relatively newly set-up aquariums in which the substrate is not yet sufficiently active, it is recommended to add high-quality feed, for example artemia, once a week. However, it is also recommended to use » Chi Ebi - rearing feed from the very beginning since it significantly accelerates the genesis of the important microorganisms and microbes. Composition: Seaweed, Cereal, Vegetables, Vegetable by-products, Spirulina Analytical Constituents: 29,6% crude protein, 4% crude fat, 11,9% raw fibre, 22,1% crude ash, 4,9% moisture Usage: Feed Ebi Dama twice a day in small amounts, but only as much as the shrimps can eat within one or two hours. If all shrimps are full, feed leftovers should as a principle be removed from the aquarium. 80g bag pictured https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3685/12911916825_96129bc859_c.jpg Shirakura Ebi Dama Special Supplementary feed for shrimps and crayfish is a herbal product. Apart from that, is also supports the growth of microorganisms and the mostly invisible microbes which dispose of food residues and excrement and are an important part of the shrimps' as well as of the baby shrimps' diet. How popular and important this is for the shrimps can be witnessed if you carefully dig up the substrate with your hand. It often only takes a few seconds until the shrimps will gather in exactly this spot to cover their need for animal proteins by eating the now available microorganisms and microbes. In order to ensure this food basis permanently and in sufficient amounts, it is recommended to regularly feed Biseibutsu no moto (Please also see feeding recommendations). Quote from Study of the University for Fisheries Science Studies by students of the University for Fisheries Science in Hokkaido/Japan have shown that in those aquariums where Shirakura's Biseibutsu no moto - rearing feed was used, significantly more baby shrimps survived and also developed better than in aquariums without the additional feeding of Biseibutsu no moto. In their microscopical research they discovered that the population of the microorganisms which are particularly important for baby shrimps was more than ten times higher when feeding Biseibutsu no moto than in a comparable aquarium without Chi Ebi. Further observations and positive side effects were the enhanced colour of the shrimps as well as crystal clear water. Usage 60 cm aquarium: 1 level spoon* per day 100 cm aquarium: 1 heaped spoon* per day Vary depending on how many animals the aquarium houses https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2861/12912012863_aea23d9b1f_z.jpg Shirakura Red Bee Bacter A beneficial bacterial supplement to help along an aquarium that is suffering from mystery deaths, low rate of survival for babies, and low activity in shrimp. Aids in the decomposition of organic matter in the substrate and water. Not only the decomposition of nitrite, ammonia, and organic matter, also is food for beneficial bacteria to aid in the growth of juvenile shrimp and increase shrimp survival rate. Usage: Comes with 6 tea bags packed with bacteria, use 1 teabag per 50 liters (~13 gallons), and let it soak for 2 days before removing the teabag from the aquarium. The bacteria will remain in effect for one week. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7390/12912012733_7750b56d8e_c.jpg Shirakura Liquid Mineral Ca+ Adds vital minerals to the aquarium water and raises its overall hardness (dGH). Especially when using very soft water, a lack of minerals is well-known to occur quite quickly and Shrimps might suffer from loss of colour and molting problems. The important microorganisms in the filter and in the substrate become inactive and the water quality decreases. A water hardness (KH) of 0-2 is recommended for breeding bee shrimps, as is a pH-value of less than 7 in order to avoid the formation of ammoniac. However, achieving these values, the overall hardness (dGH) often gets too low. In this case it is recommended to harden the water with Liquid Mineral Ca+ in order to avoid the death of the shrimps. The water hardness (KH) is not influenced by this. Mr. Shirakura furthermore recommends maintaining an overall hardness (dGH) of 5 or more for a healthy and strong skin. Example of usage: For a new aquarium, add 5 ml (about 60 droplets) of Liquid Mineral Ca+ per 10 l water. For existing aquariums with shrimps, add this dose over several days. Prepare exchange water mixture beforehand. 1 drop of Liquid Mineral Ca+ to 1 liter water raises the general hardness (GH) by about 1° dGh. I've have had great luck with 1ml per gallon to make a GH of 4-5. http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0346/6977/products/shirakura_liquid_mineral_1024x1024.jpg Tantora Shrimp Products! This clay is derived from geologic tectonic plate activity, volcanic action and river hydrolysis. Montmorillonite silicate has attracted and attached potent mineral nutrients from mountain soils and streams. The nutrients in White Mineral Stone have properties to absorb toxins and improve water clarity. White Mineral Stone once dissolved into water provides trace minerals necessary for coloration and health of ornamental shrimps. Benefits of Tantora White Mineral Stone 1.Absorb toxins in the tank onto the clay particles which helps improve water quality and clarity. Montmorillonite has powerful adsorption and absorption powers. Naturally, White Mineral Stone has a negative charge inside the layers of the stone, while toxins have positive ions. The negative-ion White Mineral Stone will attract positive ions of toxins and bind them. Toxins commonly found in the aquarium include Ammonia, Hydrogen Sulfide, Nitrite, Methane and other wastes. 2.Contains sufficient nutrients that encourage growth, health and higher survival rates of the shrimps. White Minerals Stone consists of minerals required for shrimps includes: Si (Silicon) is main nutrient in building shrimp’s exoskeleton. Shrimp’s shell will be hardened after molting period. Mg (Magnesium) is activator of several enzyme systems and digestion for shrimp. Normalize shrimp’s metabolism. Ca (Calcium) is vital in the shell building process and helps regulate pH balance. Na (Sodium) is essential nutrient in improving shrimp’s osmoregution. 3.Reduce poisonous substances in the water. Improve shrimp’s health and enhance coloration.
