The Shrimp Diaries...

Finally I ve taken the step to start and maintain my journal so I can share my experiences so others may learn and I can learn from others.

I have been in the aquarium hobby since the last 15 years or more loved oscars and visited every fish shop or store I knew of in my city.

I wasn't allowed to keep a tank for 2 years till I finally got permission and was allowed a small 15 ltrs tank in which I purchased my 1 st pair of oscars.

The excitement and joy was awesome.

I did loose them didn't know much about water or parameters or anything of that sort. Eventually I have 3 tanks with oscars ( tiger, copper, albino) which I was successful at and I managed to grow them bigger than my palm and then had to give them away.

In 2007 I moved from India to Dubai to work so I gave away all my tanks and fish to someone.

In Dubai I did visited most of the fish stores. Was was amazed by marine fish, but wasn't in position to buy, keep or maintain any tank because of time, space and the cost.

One morning my cousin (who was a fish hobbyist and had a massive marine tank couple of years ago) called me saying that he had discovered something online and told me I would love the concept they were underwater gardens and to search for planted tanks and Aquascaping and I did it and was amazed with what I saw.

I started researching more and watched more videos. Around the same time in sept 2012 we were traveling to Germany for an photo exhibition. After the exhibition we went to Munich and visited a massive pet store can remember the name now but It was paradise the biggest pet store I have ever visited till date. Its not that I haven't seen good pet stores but nothing compared to this massive store they had everything from planted show tanks, reptiles, marine , fresh water. I felt like I was in heaven.

We ended up purchasing dennerle plants Cuba, Christmas moss, grass to name a few. Once we flew back to Dubai we purchased a 200 ltrs tank ,ADA Africana soil and power sand and we also drove out in the desert up into the mountains and collected stones. Then we spent the rest of the night after work setting up the tank ( did I mention the tank was setup in my office).

This is what we created after the spending hours trying different layouts we wanted something a simple setup, the pictures are once the tank settled and the plants grew.

But here was my 1 st introduction with shrimps.

We bought 20 low grade crs and cbs mixed and added them to the tank. They were interesting and beautifully creatures didn't know much about shrimp for a while only check ph, ammonia, No2 and No3 introduced some glow light tetras and they tank did well. No special food just regular fish food and jbl shrimp food. Within a couple of months I had hundreds.

Now I was ready to setup my first tank a 60 ltrs tank.

I did have great success in my first tank with shrimps with the usual beginner ups and downs, regular massive die off due to either parameters or infection and here's where I read more and got more into the hobby.

In the mean while my office tanks was doing great with very little care or water changes. The water changes were regular aged tap water 50% straight once a month no special shrimp product nothing.

Thanks for the Journal Fernselvis.  Like you, I have had aquariums all my life, but shrimp for less then a year with the learning curve issues.  Just finished a new rack dedicated to shrimp that will hold one 20g and five 10g with two almost ready.  I like your contrast of white and black and my 20g is set up similarly.  I am curious as to what the running plants are in your photo's 5 and 6?  Looking forward to your next update.

Hey thank you for reading :). Just got a load of new shrimps. Blue bolts, kingkong, red panda, red pinto and black pinto. Will update the journal and bring it up to speed soon. Is it this plant you referring to.

Is it this one.

Glad you almost up and running. From what I have learnt is consistency with water parameters and cleaning and you should be fine. All the best.
