  1. I just bought 15 crs and 5 crb. I received some very high grade crown head variations along with 2 lesser grades I would like to insure the higher grades breed giving me some even cooler variations. I was wondering if a breeding box would be appropriate as when I placed them in it they seemed to be getting stressed. I saw a video with a guy selecting two shrimp and them immediately mating. How long would it take for the female to show her eggs to limit their time in the box. Any hep is much appreciated
  2. DIY $7 Internal Breeder Box After dealing for 3-4 years with Marina external breeder boxes ran by Elite micro pump .I decided to switch to internal ones. Not that I don’t like Marina ones but in my narrow shrimp room they are always on my way during maintenance and catching shrimps. There are some very handy models but all of them are too large for my divided tanks. After scratching my head for a week here is what I come with. You will need: Lee's specimen container http://www.marinedepot.com/Lee_s_Aquarium_Specimen_Container_Small_Fish_Containers_Traps_for_Saltwater_Aquariums-Lee_s_Aquarium_Pet_Products-LE10515-FIMISC-vi.html Some air tubbing, air stone, acrylic tube, pvc or even hose will work. Dremel or any other cutting tool, drill bit, 2 part epoxy, SS fine net. I believe most of the people having aquariums for some time will have most of the things on hand. I bought Lees for $4.99 couple of months ago. Rest of the stuff was laying around. Because 1 picture worth 1000 words here is the design.
  3. Hey all, I'm fairly new to the hobby and had a quick question. One of my Red Rili shrimp has been berried for a while and I'm wondering if I should move her to a mesh breeder box. I was looking specifically at this Lee's Net Breeder: http://www.amazon.com/Lee-10265-Lees-Net-Breeder/dp/B0002APRKQ?ie=UTF8&keywords=mesh%20breeder&qid=1465454586&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1 I have my shrimp in a 10 Gallon Rimless JBJ and all of my shrimp have been doing great. I'm really excited about my first berried female and don't want to lose these babies. Please let me know your thoughts on what would be best. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Also, I'll try to attach a picture!
  4. I own one small marina breeder box (given to me by a friend) which I have only used to isolate my peacock gudgeons during breeding. It's a bit small for this so I was going to get a medium or large. So I was looking around Amazon, and saw they have multipacks so I figured I'd get a couple extra for my shrimp tanks. I want to get mediums (0.2g), but should I use the small one I have for the shrimp? I don't really see any disadvantage of the mediums over the small... So I was wondering who has had experience using these for drip acclimation/selective breeding, and what size is best for this?
  5. I have a couple Ziss BL-2 internal breeder boxes that I'd like to start using to selectively breed (not raise shrimplets). I have a some questions I was hoping that people with experience using Ziss boxes, other internal breeder boxes, or external breeder boxes might be able to answer. How long do you let your breeder boxes "mature" before transferring shrimp into them? What do you have in your breeder boxes? (substrate bed, scattered loose substrate, moss, wood, cholla, etc) In the context of Caridina shrimp, how can you tell when opaque shrimp are berried and ready to mate? (how to know when to put females in the box) Are breeder boxes less healthy than the rest of the tank? Should I be concerned about anything special while they are in the box? Should I be lightly feeding in the box since there could be less biofilm and substrate goodies? Is there a maximum amount of time I should leave a shrimp in the breeder box before they should be taken out and allowed to roam the rest of the aquarium? I'm planning on using them my with rimmed 40 breeder, and thus have to use the suction cups to mount the boxes internally. I know you can't picture this without a photo, but if there is enough lateral flow (from my canister) through the 2 screens and through the BL-2, is airstone/oxygen even necessary? (There is already adequate oxygenation in the tank). I have several mature fems that I'd really love not only be berried, but also be able to choose the fathers. If anyone that selectively breeds with boxes can share some insight, specifically on the question regarding how to identify when females should be put in the box, I would greatly appreciate it.
  6. So, we had to take a break on any breeding plans to fix our setup issues. With no deaths in a week and babies all staying in their respective tanks, I'm starting to plan for some selective breeding. I have one male tiger that I really want to try to breed and am thinking of using a breeder box. So for those of you who use them, when do you put the animals in there? Do you wait for saddles on the females? How many do you put in there? Obviously I'll only put the one male, but how many females? How long do you leave them in there? Any and all advice is welcome.
  7. I am so glad I found this forum. I recently bought a large air-powered breeding box and although it is a great idea, i feel like it can be so much better. Please share any mods that you have done to the original breeding box or any equipment you put into the box to help its functionality. Also if you have made your own breeding boxes either out of acrylic or any other material it would be great to see those as well.
