Silencing filters using lubricant (vaseline) on impeller?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I've heard of people using Vaseline to lubricate their filter's impeller to make it run quietly, is this practice safe for shrimps?

I plan to make my AquaClear 50 more silent.

Vaseline is the most readily available thing in my house but I've also heard of people using Silicone lubricant and Plumber's Silicone Grease (there is probably more options out there).

Has anyone tried this and can confirm it is safe for shrimp?

Thanks for reading!

I'm not sure if it works but when I remove my AC HOBs' motors for the first time, there is always this sticky things that I suspect might be Vaseline?

I have used it on impellers when they wouldn't spin but not to make them quieter.  I also haven't tried this on tanks with shrimp.

Was it used in a tank with fish?  Were the fish okay?

I've used it on an ac70 on my community tank with amano shrimp. Quiets it down for about a month. May want to try replacing impeller thingy.

Was there any negative effects seen to your Amano shrimp?  Or any of the livestock in your community tank?

According to this youtube video it seems like Silicon Oil is safe for shrimps:
