Darkchylde72
Would CaribSea Eco-Complete mixed with some black aquarium sand be okay to use as a substrate for shrimp and plants? I'm trying to setup a 20L for shrimp, snails, plants and some guppies/neons. I'm totally new to shrimp and have only had ghost shrimp so far. I want to get some other types once I get the tank setup and cycled. I have a 10 gallon right now with a mystery snail, ghost shrimp, fancy guppies and a small algae eater (forget the name, but it doesn't get very big). Thanks for any help. I'm sorry, total newbie here and want to get started the right way. SurraGync
chibikaie
Depends on which shrimp you are looking to keep. Have you made any decisions yet?
Subtletanks91
Guppies and neos come from south America and do better in lower Ph. Most species do anyways. Where neos need a higher Ph. I always go for a buffer substrate. Economy complete is inert.
mayphly
I keep tiger shrimp in eco-complete and they do fine. I wouldn't recommend caridina shrimp be kept in it since most of them preffer acidic water with a lower ph.
Darkchylde72
I was going for Red Cherry Shrimp and maybe some other beginner type. I wasn't exactly sure which ones would be good for beginners. I'm still learning and reading up on things. Since I can get Cherry Shrimp locally, that was going to be the first ones that I get. junglefowl
Eco-complete and red cherry shrimps will do together very well. I have them in a 10 gal tank for more than 2 years and they're still breeding strong. junglefowl
I also use tap water with prime when doing water change and my tank keeps PH at 7.2-7.5. So if the shrimps come from the source with different PH from your area. I think they will need time to adapt. But red cherry shrimps is hardy. Pika
Yup, my tank is EcoComplete and Neos as well - with mostly RO plus a little tap sometimes. For whatever reason, my pH tends to stay quite acidic as well, but it's not the substrate's doing, and I wouldn't likely put most Caridinas in there. I'd go with the buffering substrates for them. (Though I am hoping to get some tigers with my Neos at some point, because they are apparently more tolerant.)
