Algae problem

Recommended Posts

Evening,

I was wondering what kind of algae this is. Is it harmful since it keeps growing back on my filter. When my crs population started going downhill was when I picked this algae and removed it. Today I picked it off in my blue bolt tank and one my blue bolts died. Yesterday they were fine my parameters are l

Kh:1 Gh:5 nitrates:0 nitrites:0 ammonia:0 pH:6.5 also my blue bolt that just died well it's not dead it's little mouth is still moving... Is there a way to save it? Thankspost-1968-0-58945700-1438221915_thumb.jp the blue bolt was on its side but I turned it over lightly to see if anything was wrong with it.

I have the same stuff growing on my sponge filters and driftwood.  I am now convince it came with moss balls I put in the tank as nothing else had algae on it.  The shrimps seem to like picking over it, but I have been pulling out the filter sponges and pulling this stuff off recently.  Took out all the driftwood with it on too.  I think its bad, but as I don't know the name of it or what's causing it I don't know for sure.

Maybe someone else can tell us.

Those look like spirogyra. Use your fingers to rub them. If it feels slimy, then confirm is spirogyra.

Spirogyra will bloom when your tank is/ was experiencing ammonia spike and your lighting is too strong or too close to your sponge filter. This may explain why the population is going downhill or the decaying shrimps are causing it.

Spirogyra does not kill your shrimp. What kills your shrimp is also causing spirogyra, or the decaying carcass is causing the spirogyra and more shrimp to die.

In your other thread, I was asking you how long have you set up your tank. What is your feeding and dosing regime? What often and how much water do you change?
