Jaykidding
Evening, I was wondering what kind of algae this is. Is it harmful since it keeps growing back on my filter. When my crs population started going downhill was when I picked this algae and removed it. Today I picked it off in my blue bolt tank and one my blue bolts died. Yesterday they were fine my parameters are l Kh:1 Gh:5 nitrates:0 nitrites:0 ammonia:0 pH:6.5 also my blue bolt that just died well it's not dead it's little mouth is still moving... Is there a way to save it? Thanks the blue bolt was on its side but I turned it over lightly to see if anything was wrong with it. monty703
I have the same stuff growing on my sponge filters and driftwood. I am now convince it came with moss balls I put in the tank as nothing else had algae on it. The shrimps seem to like picking over it, but I have been pulling out the filter sponges and pulling this stuff off recently. Took out all the driftwood with it on too. I think its bad, but as I don't know the name of it or what's causing it I don't know for sure. Maybe someone else can tell us.

If it feels slimy, then confirm is spirogyra. Spirogyra will bloom when your tank is/ was experiencing ammonia spike and your lighting is too strong or too close to your sponge filter. This may explain why the population is going downhill or the decaying shrimps are causing it.

Shrimpy Daddy
Yeah when I picked it off it was a slimy ooze looking thing Then it is spirogyra.
Jaykidding
How do I get rid of it cuz I found another dead shrimp...
Shrimpy Daddy
Spirogyra does not kill your shrimp. What kills your shrimp is also causing spirogyra, or the decaying carcass is causing the spirogyra and more shrimp to die. In your other thread, I was asking you how long have you set up your tank. What is your feeding and dosing regime? What often and how much water do you change? JosephKex
Jaykidding
Water change 1 a week feeding is like every 3 days. Tank was 2-4 months I set the crystal and blue bolt tank at same time
Shrimpy Daddy
Sounds like your tank is too dirty and your your top layer of substrate has depleted nutrients. How many shrimps are left in the tank? Do you have Purigen in the filter or sitting somewhere in your house?
fish_guy
Try doing 50% water changes every day for about a week. That will get rid of every extra nutrient in the water and stop the algae problem. I keep planted tanks and that is always the best way to stop this problem
Shrimpy Daddy
Doing 50% WC for a week will wipe off all shrimps. Not a good idea.
popimac
Big no no for such huge water change for shrimp tank, unless you intend to reset.
Shrimpy Daddy
If you want to restart water, you can follow this article but just use your preferred products: http://www.shrimpydaddy.com/pages/water-restarting-procedure
Jaykidding
What does a reset do? And I have 6 shrimp left and have no purigen
Shrimpy Daddy
To reset the water for clearing up all the dissolved waste in the water (usually unable to be measure). In addition, it will bring your nutrients level back to normal.
