Shrimp lover
Hi everyone, I am wondering how much controsoil would be good for a 20 gallon planted (shrimp) tank? It has to have enough depth for the plants, so I'm worried 1 bag won't be enough! If it's not, I think I will get 35 lbs of fluval stratum thanks

Shrimple minded
I'm fairly certain that one bag will give you sufficient depth for plants in a 20 gallon tank. I used 2 bags in my 40 breeder (4.5 square foot area) and have a depth of ~2 inches throughout. Although the below link doesn't have Controsoil as a choice, it could help give an estimate of your needs. http://www.plantedtank.net/substratecalculator.html
JamesHe
Only need 1" thick. so 1/4 bag is good enough.
JamesHe
For 10 gallon, I use 2.5lbs. For 20L, I use 5lbs. pH stables at 5.5 If you add too much, pH may drop too low.
JamesHe
For planted tank, Controsoil is not first choice. try ADA Aquasoil instead. Controsoil is first choice for bee shrimp tank.
DETAquarium
I used one bag of Controsoil for my 17.1g Mr. Aqua aquarium and its perfect in my opinion.

Thank you so much! I will be ordering a bag soon! For planted tank, Controsoil is not first choice. try ADA Aquasoil instead. Controsoil is first choice for bee shrimp tank. I am mainly going to have low light plants (crypts, dwarf sag, etc.), but the tank is mainly going to be for the shrimp!
NeMox69x
RyeGuy can you post a picture? I just got myself a bag of controsoil and plan on also doing a 20 long tank or possibly a 15 gallon. I'm curious to what it looks like (depth)
Jadenlea
I just finished cycling a tank with 1 20 lb bag of controsoil in a 20 L tank. It is plenty deep for any kind of plant.
Jadenlea
not sure if you can tell the depth from this pic but here http://www.shrimpspot.com/index.php?/topic/4642-haunted-aquarium/ its posted in this string
