shamedic
So I just wanted to know what shrimp safe fertilizer people are using and if it would help with my set up. I have 40g breeder with java moss and anub. every one says that java moss grows like weeds but im not having that. My moss is growing just very slow. I started with about a baseball size and it might of doubled but it has been prob. 8 months and im wanting to put some in my 2nd and 3rd 40g breeder. do you think a fertilizer would help it grow faster? OMG Aquatics
Flourish would be best if you're on a budget. I dose Flourish daily in my tanks. Calculate weeks worth of Flourish required and divide by 7 to dose daily.
LesterBee
You didn't say what sort of light you have over the tank A 40 breeder is pretty big and would require a decent sized and lumen output lamp to grow even a low light plant like Java Moss well. And 'growing like weeds' is relative for Java Moss, it doesn't grow like Rotala or even Water Sprite in even optimal conditions. If you want better growth you'll have to accept doing things to the water chemistry that might endanger your shrimp.

Calculate weeks worth of Flourish required and divide by 7 to dose daily. Ingredients on the website for Seachem: Derived from: Potassium Chloride, Calcium Chloride, Copper Sulfate, Magnesium Chloride, Ferrous Gluconate, Cobalt Sulfate, Magnesium Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Boric Acid, Sodium Molybdate, Zinc Sulfate, Protein Hydrolysates. I would exercise a bit of caution about your TDS changes while daily dosing with Flourish. My concern about the Copper Sulfate in Flourish, (although it is in really minute amounts..) is how accumulative it becomes, Our house has little GH and slightly acid water from our well, with copper pipes and I'm concerned enough about free copper ions in our tap water to run the tap for a few minutes to clear any sitting copper out of the pipes, when I do a water change. People on municipal water sources shouldn't have to do this. 1 hour ago, OMG Aquatics said:
chappy6107
you might try using a moss ledge to elevate the plant a little closer to the light. Getting the right fert dosage for the level of plants you have can take a bit of "dialing in" which alot of times results in algae blooms until you get it right. shamedic
right now I have two 36inch Beamswork EA Timer FSPEC LED Aquarium Light Freshwwater Plant Extendable from amazon on the tank for about 3 weeks with a timer 8 hrs a day. B4 that I had some marineland double bright led. I work 12 hr shift work so days and night so I will not be dosing daily. as for moss ledge I just made one from light diffuser so that is about 3 inch tall on the bottom and 6 inch on the top almost like a coral rack. can I trim the moss by cutting it or should I keep pulling it apart
Shrimp Life
Your lights are fine for Java Moss. I never use ferts. Moss can take a while before it takes off. You just got the better lights 3 weeks ago so you should see an improvement soon!
chappy6107
2 hours ago, shamedic said: can I trim the moss by cutting it or should I keep pulling it apart yes you can trim by cutting. in the planted tank world, those gurus suggest cutting most plants when trimming to help with growth. I know moss is a different type plant than stem plants, but it seems like it would apply to most plants.
shamedic
Here is a pic of the moss rack thing I was talking about when it grows in more I'll be adding more moss to the sides to fill it all in it takes up a third of the 40g breeder
OMG Aquatics
http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/88-shrimp-other-invertebrates/178476-copper-shrimp-myth-vs-truth.html I've done 2x EI daily dosing in my planted tank with shrimps before with 0 death. The moment people see copper, they freak out. A lot of bad info on the web. Flourish EI Daily is only Cu 0.00003 Plantex CSM+B EI Daily is Cu 0.001 With Flourish, you're not required to dose it daily but its just recommended. You can dose Flourish 2-3x weekly if you wish instead of daily.
newportjon
I've been using this: http://nilocg.com/ThriveS/ I have been dosing small amounts to start and slowly increasing them to avoid an algae explosion. So far, so good.
