I was going to use this for a planted tank, bought two bags and cut the corner of this in preparation for pouring it in the tank. We didn't end up using any of it so I taped the corner back up. No soil at all was used. This is good stuff for growing plants, and it buffers my 7.8 pH tap water down to around 6.2-6.4 (hard to see a clear difference for me on the pH test). It's very dense, doesn't blow around with higher flow, and has a pretty short period where it releases ammonia. $30 shipped priority flat rate.
