Hi guys , Im going from a 6 gallon Fluval edge and Im buying a 9 gallon Eheime aqua-style tank . I have RED cherry shrimp mix adults -shrimplets nice red color, CRS some 1 F having babys soon, and TT shrimp small ones.. and moss, and hair algae ! I have seigui stones Im selling with the F edge and sand blk and F stratum topper. How should I transfer the shrimp ? Can I put some new substrate on the botom and 1/2 inch of old subtrate over it ? The Ehime filter is small and will have biological -mechnical, and litte room for for my old filter media thanks..

Can you put the Eheim filter media inside the Fluval Edge filter? Seed it there for a couple weeks to a month before transferring it over to the Eheim's container. When you move it over, you transfer everything else at the same time.

When you make the transfer, use as much of the old tank's water and substrate as you can (can't say whether it makes a difference on top or mixed in). I like to hold the livestock in a temporary container with old tank water and a bubbler for a day or two to make sure the new tank can settle a bit (ammonia spikes and substrate debris). This has worked well for me in the past as the shrimp get their old water, old substrate, and old bacterial colony in the new tank.

The more traditional alternative is to do a full cycle on the new tank with the old running and transfer everything when it's done. More time but you don't have to do the entire transfer in one day.

Ideally set up the new tank and let it run for a month and then start catching and transferring stuff over.  You can also move some old substrate to mix or cap your new stuff to seed it.  Then just start moving the shrimp over.  You probably don't need to use old filter media but it wouldn't hurt to move a little over if you can.  It will take some time to catch all the tiny tiny babies in the old tank (typically takes me several days).
