Anyone have experience with anaerobic denitrification?

Marine pure ceramic bio media will grow the bacteria you speak of on the inside of the ball where the flow is slower. Also seachems denitrate will grow it on the inside as well with slower flow rates. A diy reactor works well to use denitrate for that purpose. You can put marine pure anywhere in your tank or filter.

I believe you can also build a freshwater deep sand bed, although I was unclear on just how to achieve this successfully. I think the HMF also operates on the principle that over time, anaerobes will colonize the foam to some extent and will begin to remove nitrates. Unfortunately, I am not sure how long this takes, how to ensure that it does happen, or how effective it is - duckweed is probably eating most of my nitrates in my tanks, so I can't really experiment.

chibikaie, Don't those ducks spook the shrimp when they dive under the water? :D

My favorite nitrate remover is plants and purigen.  0 nitrates for a long time.  Although I would not hesitate to build a DIY reactor if what I had was not working.
