Changing over to a sponge filter???

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I presently have  an azoo mignon filter on a 3.5 gallon shrimp tank at work.

I like it but I'm worried about power outages which happen occasionally but  especially happen n the summer where I live,

I orderd one of these:

Cubefilters 3-inch

The 45pp one.

Do you think going with a sponge is better?  Anyone use these?  Do you like them?  How long should I run both of them together?  Is a month enough or 6 weeks?

I don't want a cycle bump.

Thank you :)

Thanks,

Liza

I prefer sponges due to simplicity and they work. I run both sponge and power filters. The sponges are used for biological and mechanical and I use aqua-clears for chemical/mechanical filtration using sponge and purigen.

Run the sponges for a month.

I see in the pic a 20ppi sponge. I wouldn't use 20ppi with babies. 30ppi and smaller is recommended for baby shrimp and fry.

+1 on running both for at least a month

The only drawback I see is the noise that most air pumps are noisy compared to hob and canisters filters.

True for the most part but a good air pump like the Alita's or Jehmco's version are very quiet.
