I bought a similar looking $12 ph meter on amazon and have had trouble getting accurate results but might be because I did not soak the tip long enough before use. Others have had good reports for the same meter. Ymmv.

Tom Barr has an excellent read of ph meters. http://www.barrreport.com/showthread.php/11002-Effective-use-and-care-of-pH-meters-and-probes

Pinpoint is minimum if you want to long term accuracy.

I use Digital Aquatics Lifeguard, very nice:

I have and use the HM digital ph meter, it measures PH and Temperature. It is not cheap, but it works extremely well. Remember you get what you pay for..

I've tried several ph meters, and have yet to find one that works correctly and consistently, even after being calibrated several times. The API master kit and even test strips give me more accurate results than the meters I have tried. A couple of them were very expensive, but I just don't trust it.

Exactly my feelings.... The first ever one I bought was a $10 one from ebay, that one actually has been the most consistent and accurate one I've owned, I then tried a few from my friends, and bought a Milwaukee one. The Milwaukee one is only accurate when it's in the calibration fluid (PH 7.0x and 4.0x), but anywhere else (i.e. in my tanks) it would give me wacky numbers.

So, I'm back to API test kit. Fast and I only care if it's light yellow.

I also noticed that ph meters take a really long time to settle with the correct reading like 3-4 mins. Swirling it in the water helps speed it up.

From my experience it takes around 10 minutes or longer to get a stable reading. This is with both my pinpoint one as well as my cheap handheld one

For pH probe, it requires monthly maintenance and calibration.

If you did above correctly, it's big plus to help you keeping an eyes on pH swings.

there is pH log from my Lifeguard:

the regular pH probe only has life span of 1.5 year typical, so replacing pH probe is very expensive. normally it cost $40-$50 per probe.

professional type pH probe can be refilled, more expensive and but you can use it for many years.
