Elo500
Here's another hard to find substrate that sounds perfect. http://www.calaqualabs.com/substrates.html They make a black earth and green base xr. Site says u.s. Suppliers are green leaf aquarium and thewetspot but neither list it online. Anyone try it yet? Product descriptions: Black Earth Premium Black Earth Premium is a fertile soil substrate made from natural soil rich in natural nutrients and minerals. It is developed from the ground up and is the result of years of cumulative research and testing. The end result is a highly-advanced, highly-fertile substrate that does not leach harmful ammonia into the water column. Green Base XR Green Base XR is a fertile base substrate designed specially for long-term planted tank setups. It is developed using advanced polymer-controlled release technology for underwater use, and provides sustained, active nutrient release underwater without nutrient spikes commonly seen in similar products. Its components work together synergistically to yield long-term lush, healthy plant growth with minimal maintenance.
DETAquarium
I noticed Cal Aqua's substrate about 4-6 months ago, but never knew if they actually ever released it to retailers to sell to the public.
Elo500
GLA said they might carry it after the first of the year.
DETAquarium
GLA said they might carry it after the first of the year. Did GLA give you anymore details?

Elo500
This was the email from GLA: Currently we do not have in stock. We hope to have full stock after the new year. So far the results we have seen have been well received. We continue to watch the progress as hobbyist tank sin Australia mature with the substrate in use for 1 year. h4n

countryboy12484
I made a post on skf asking about the substrate, we shall see what they have to say about it
countryboy12484
My AU friends are telling me that they prefer black earth over ada.. It does leach ammonia but no where near as bad as ada, they tell me that it doesnt crumble like ada does, it matches ada soils buffering abilities. mayphly and h4n
Purplepanda
Ok some time has passed since this thread was posted and so wondered if folks now had more long term experience with using this substrate in our higher grade shrimp tanks and the comparisons with ADA ? Maurice
Purplepanda, we have it in SA and have heard a lot of good reviews on it, tho never used it for myself. it is a little harder than AS and don't break down as quickly, yet it does not buffer as low also, yet you can easily get to Ph 6 with it another added benefit is the cycling process is a lot faster than AS. I think it's the same as with Contrasoil Purplepanda
Purplepanda
Good on you Maurice, thanks. Surely there must be some members out there that have used it for a longer period by now and have an informed opinion ?
EricM
not going to find really any in the USA with experience beyond ADA, SL-Aqua, controsoil, and a few brightwell.
Purplepanda
Ok thought it was available in the US, but presume other folk have tried it out in their shrimp tank that don't necessarily live in the US. Where is Cal Aqua Labs based, can't find these details on their website ?
