Crazyfishlady Posted January 2, 2015 Report Posted January 2, 2015 I know that cholla wood, 'drift wood', mopani and Malaysian Driftwood are fine but I have to buy those things online or at LFS. My budget is tight right now and I stand outside and look at tons of little branches laying around and can't help wonder "would they be safe in the tank?" I know I would need to 'treat' them but... how do I know if a wood is safe and how would I treat it? Quote
RyeGuy411 Posted January 2, 2015 Report Posted January 2, 2015 I would imagine most hard woods are safe for shrimp tank. You would obviously want to boil them for many reasons. Maybe stick to standard wood like oak, maple, ash I would think fruit trees would be ok as well like cherry, apple etc. Quote
aquariumlover10 Posted January 2, 2015 Report Posted January 2, 2015 If you have a lake or creek nearby, go to it and look for wood in the water or on the bank, and take it home and boil it then soak for a week or two, then boil and soak for a day and you'll be good. Quote
DemonUnleashed Posted January 3, 2015 Report Posted January 3, 2015 I bought some aquarium "safe" wood awhile ago and when boiling it a lot of sap was released every time. So it went into a bonfire pile. Quote
Roborep1 Posted January 3, 2015 Report Posted January 3, 2015 As rye guy said most any hardwood is fine. Not green. Dry wood. Take off bark. Boil it is good idea. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Crazyfishlady 1 Quote
Puddles Posted January 3, 2015 Report Posted January 3, 2015 I've personally used apple with no problems. Like others I believe hard wood would be good. Quote
