nmac15
Would anyone recomend or not recomend building up a layer of controsoil with sand for a tb tank? It's purely for aesthetic purposes
JamesHe
What's the reason to add sand? you can just do thin layer of Contro soil.
Jaykidding
Maybe he wants to have a higher end for aquascaping for a hill?? I did that with my ada as, also he may want to use the controsoil amongst his tanks.
Jaykidding
Also it depends what type of sand it is. If it is one that doesnt buffer the ph then it will be fine
thekonexperiment
What's the reason to add sand? you can just do thin layer of Contro soil. +1. you can also use small lava rocks as a substitute for the sand since its much more course and provides more beneficial bacteria. I've used lava rocks to create higher aquascaping. Sand as the underlayer wont be beneficial since its so dense . unless the sand you're referring to is large like pebbles and is inert. nmac15
Yes the sand is to make the back much higher for aquascaping and filling between large rocks. I will be using pool filter sand so it wont affect water chemistry.
nmac15
Fyi the tank that i am referring to will be very large and built into a wall in my basement under the staircase. It will be a show tank with only tb's
DETAquarium
I would definitely recommend lava rocks of some sort as many have recommended. Sand is very dense and compact and lava rocks allow bacteria and micro organisms to colonize much easier, overall for a much healthier substrate. Look forward to seeing your show tank. JamesHe
In shrimp tank, shrimp would eventually level the substrate. Please keep this in mind.
