mosspearl
I ran across this new design for a planted filter. They're going to start their kickstarter for it in a week or so. What do you guys think? http://aquaponicsfilter.com/ SurraGync
Sake
Doesn't look like you could fit very many plants in it. Also the LED light seems pretty low, you'd be really limited on what you could grow. Is this just their nano version?
Axelrod12
Looks interesting. But quite small. I too wonder if they will have a larger version. Could just be the picture since I don't have anything for scale but the last picture of one of the tanks on the page does look larger. Soothing Shrimp
So, if there's plants in the tank that essentially do the same thing, why run it through a plant "filter" up above at all?
mosspearl
Best of both worlds? I know a lot of people also put plants in their HOBs. Maybe grow some kitchen herbs in the fish tank? Dunno. They talked about making larger ones, but for the kickstarter went with a smaller one to make it more manageable and affordable. I don't know what they're going to charge for it or anything. Always interested to see new innovations, though. This does look like it's only nano-sized. Axelrod12
I've got some plants in one of my hobs I just kinda like the way it looks and it does have some filtration benefits I guess. MABJ
I don't believe it will be super impactful. I think it will be normal filtration. I'd be interested in purchasing the whole system, though, to try it out.
myklt8
It is a very attractive tank, I could see it in an office or dorm room
MABJ
Contacted the creator. They're selling the entire unit. Early bird is $98. I'll be picking one up. It is interesting that they provide two different types of filtration, a tank, proper lighting AND UV Sterilization. Really what more could you ask for lol. Soothing Shrimp
how many gal?
MABJ
They are debating between 1-2 gal. I gave my input that the more the better, so 2gal.
Soothing Shrimp
Yeah. The more water, the more stable params.
mosspearl
Cool! A little out of my price range at the moment for the size, but I wish them much success.
GreenBliss
2 gallons? Staying away from that size myself. Having trouble with my 3 gallon. Hope you take photos of the tank, MABJ.
mosspearl
I'm not afraid of the size... I have two 2.5 gallons right now. Of course they're nowhere near as pretty as the one they're making, but I could get them for $14, which was a lot kinder to my wallet. Oh, why aren't authors richer so they could pay me more? Then my hobby could expand to include cool toys like this!
MABJ
Haha! That's my hobby, too, moss pearl. I'll most certainly take pics, but they don't anticipate having the tank out until July 1. That'll be good for me. $100 is my budget for every tank I start, so this is actually already all set up for me light wise, filtration wise, tank wise and even comes with seeds and soil lol. I'm advising them in certain parts of final creation, so I hope they listen.
GreenBliss
July? I didn't know it was going to be that long before it's out.

MABJ
Yeah they're developing the new product. They have to have expensive injection molds created. Those can cost between 10-40k depending on how many/how large.

Soothing Shrimp
If they are doing injection molding, I'd imagine that is to create the tank in one piece (at least the bottom portion) to eliminate any seam.

Ahhhhh. Yeah. I imagine so as well. If I understood, the filter is in 4 plastic pieces. I really hope they build the tank in glass though. MABJ
They're planning on acrylic, I think. The kickstarter is live! Within the first 13 hours, they've already raised $9,000. If you can pledge/want to invest in one, consider supporting it! mosspearl
