Shrimpinista
Is it possible to have too many plants? I have a very established 1.5 year old tank with Amazonia substrate. My parms are: temp 70 ammonia & nitrite 0 nitrate 5 kh 3 gh 6 ph 5.2 - 6.0 I do regular water changes of 10 - 20% every couple of weeks or so. It is a shrimp only tank. I live in SW Florida so do not have a heater. We keep our house at 70 degrees year round. I keep only crystal reds and have noticed lately that there has been a fall off in population. I seem to remember reading somewhere that at night the CO2 rises from the plants and was wondering if this could be the issue. Any ideas? sparky4056
Your kh is getting pretty high for crs. It's usually advised to keep them in a kh of 0-1. With your soil being that old it might be exhausted. I'm not sure as to the plants though, I keep my tank very sparsely planted.

Shrimpinista
I rechecked it and it is at 1. My last test was early in the morning just after the lights had come on. I do not use CO2 but I m wonder if the plants are releasing CO2 at night. I am going to do some judicious plant removal. Thanks for the responses. NickAus
What sort of filter do you use?
Memphis118
It's definitely possible, if you do not have any water agitation to release the co2.
