I just use the bags that they sell pre-filled and just recharge them when they run out. If you use too much, it won't hurt, you'll just have to recharge it less often. If you use too little, you'll just have to recharge it more often. It really depends on how dirty your water is, how much turnover you have, how often you feed, etc...
