  1. So I'm getting 8 Blue steel from White Boa parents tomorrow. I see quite a lot of information on things like taiwan bee x tiger mischlings, but when it comes to two lines that are already cross breeds how do the traits manifest? Is it still possible to get a pinto and blue steel as visual genes? Or am I just likely to get percentages of each shrimps lineage rather than a combination of the traits. My plan is to hopefully get some boas and work on that line individually, but if the possibility of blue steel white boas is there, it may be an interesting project for me. Any insight is much appreciated, I've been scouring for any information I can get.
  2. I'm pulling this conversation over here into a thread for culling questions! (One facet of selective breeding.. Y'all who want to "pull color out of dots" and other more advanced topics may want to start an advanced topics thread)I'm starting to get to the point where I have a lot of beginner questions on the subject too, so it might be a good place to come to get advice about the which, when, where, how to from people who do a lot of selection with their shrimp. I'm sure there are lots of approaches, and it's nice to hear them all, from the super basic to the room-full-of-tanks. So, more experienced selectors, also feel free add a post with your favored criteria/protocol... Plus you'll be able to reference it later when people ask.
  3. Hi Hello - I am new to the forum. I have never kept shrimps before ( have kept tropical fish in various types for many years ) but I am about to , I have all the gear ready to go but am moving house in a few weeks so waiting until then to get stuck in. Now moving on to the title question / s ..... do King Kong shrimp breed true? Does black X black always = black - same for red X red and yellow X yellow. Also mixing the colours - I've read somewhere that black is dominant to red but the red can be carried in split form , where does the yellow form stand in this is it recessive to both black and red ? I have noticed there are various patterns in KK ( extreme - with the tip of the tail white against a solid main colour ) but also some with bands on them, are these actual recognised patterns or are they just better / worse grades ? If they are recognised patterns - do the patterns breed true also ? Which shrimp are required to breed KK's without using a KK as a parent? Thanks M
  4. I find this very interesting. 🔬 These are greens that developed from my #neomix tank. Any thoughts?
  5. Hello, first of all, I'm new here and I'm from Spain I've been keeping fish for almost 4 years now and I want to give it a try to the shrimps. The ones I've selected are the bloody mary, and I have a few questions about them. I've read a lot about if they breed true or not but all the articles and post I've read are from 1 or 2 years ago and I want to know if they improved the strain. I want to obtain the best colour I can but I don't have much idea of what I'm doing so if someone could be kind enough to give me a small guide of how to select the best males and females and an easy way to remove the rest from the tank. Thank you very mucho for reading all this and I hope you answer me.
  6. Hey! I'm new to the hobby. I have a tank that's been live cycling with a couple white cloud mountain minnows for a while. I'm still having a struggle with chloramines, but once that's dealt with and the minnows go back to my lfs (Forest Lake Pets) I am gonna move on to setting up my tank. Here's the skinny of it: 26gal bowfront, Aqueon Quietflow 30 (I think), got some tasty gunk building up on the glass and driftwood, pretty solid flow and aeration, temp unregulated right now for the minnows' sake. My vision is to turn this into a pretty low-tech planted aquarium. Seachem Flourite Black substrate, hair grass carpet, moss on the driftwood centerpiece, and taller background plants (yet to be determined), and some sweet little stones (or marimo moss balls if the light is good enough). Black background on it too. I want to have this lush green/black palette with some fantastic red shrimps living in it. I just want to have a colony of red shrimps that breed true for the most part. I don't feel excited about aggressively culling them all. They don't have to be extremely hardy-- I am still probably gonna wait about a month to plant it and make sure I've figured out how to do my water changes. That's about it. Red shrimps. Low cull rate. Preferably something that won't keel over dead at the drop of 0.1 pH-- I'm definitely a beginner. Stripes/patterns are cool as long as the red shows up strong in the adult offspring. Any species that fit this ok? (Price isn't too important, I'm buying all this spread out enough that my savings will survive the colony starters. Unless I kill them. In that case I'm probably gonna give up and grab some tetras and perhaps a different invert.)
  7. I have been keeping a colony of Sakura/Fire Reds(?) for about a year. This has to be a couple generations in since I haven't added any new shrimp in a year. I had a blue baby that grew up to be almost completely blue with a slightly red rostrum. Mind you the rest of that batch of babies are red. Any explanations? Is this a mutation?
  8. Here is my Green Jade Momma. She has been berried for a week. This is her first time berried. I got 10 baby green jades and raised them. Only 2 are for sure female. They are both berried this week. They were slow growers for the most part. I am interested to know if anyone has been breeding green jades and the outcome of the offspring. I am hoping for a decent amount of green jade babies!
  9. What kind of shrimp would come from a Wine Red 1 line Taiwan Bee shrimp breeding with a Crystal Red shrimp? Would this be a mischling, wine red, or crystal red shrimp? OR all of the above? I am trying to understand how genetics work with shrimp. Reference pictures attached.
  10. Hi All, Can anyone identify what these black specks are on this Blue Velvet Shrimp? Does it look like something is wrong or possibly just a genetic thing? I edited to add another pic of one that looks like he has red spots on his side. I can't say whether they've always been there or not but I don't recall seeing them before. Thank you!
