Pika
Found this girl this morning with her new racing stripe/mohawk. Haven't heard of a longitudinal line being a molt issue (at least not the traditional behind-the-head crack). But it sure looks like the shell is thicker down that midline, and either didn't come off properly... or won't the next time she molts. Is there a known cause for this? Is it what I think it is or something else? Today's readings: Temp: 72 TDS 214 gH 5 kH 2 (will do the others if wanted, usually ammo 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 5-10) Currently using Fluval Shrimp Mineral, although hoping to upgrade to SS gH/kH when ready for my next purchase. Aquasapien69
That's just normal neo coloration. Nothing to be concerned about. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Pika
That would be awesome news! It's just new, hadn't seen it before, although I'm obviously new at this. She's still going about her business normally, but I sure was worried about her.
ravensgate
Yep racing stripes on neos can be quite common! Nothing to worry about:)
snowpetals
I have a female that looks just like that. i love the stripes
Soothing Shrimp
In fact neon yellows were bred to always produce that racing stripe.
Subtletanks91
I know the females usually get the racing stripes when there older. But never knew a male in my tank to have the racing stripes. Only bullseye dots
Soothing Shrimp
Yepper. Males can get them too. Some high quality lines of neon have every shrimp/gender with the line. A nice bold straight line like someone swiped them with a marker.
Pika
So, is this a generally desirable trait or kind of a niche preference? I have to say, I prefer the uniform look (although she does look pretty rockin') so I know I'd likely cull her if/when I have enough and somewhere to cull to. But would others value this trait? In reds, or just yellows?
Soothing Shrimp
It has a small audience in the US, but a very small audience is there. In other parts of the globe, the breed the stripe in almost every color as just another variation.
