Mikeyp85
Thinkin of getting the finnex breeder box with the power head and light to try and separate my blue diamonds that are berried. Anybody use one or have any suggestions or input?
Subtletanks91
I think it's a great idea. A lot of people actually use these. They'll put there darkest or most deeply colored shrimp in there and breed them out let the babies go back into the tank and let them continue to breed. Then you have a lot of culling to do haha. I wish I had space to use one of these but my daughter would be pulling on it too much.
Soothing Shrimp
Anyone know where the best price is for this combo?
Subtletanks91
It. Might be best to get a sudo breeder box from ebay across seas and a small power head pump on amazon.
Mikeyp85
Ah I bit the bullet and went with the finnex complete package lights and power head for like 40 bucks.. Seems fair.. Thanks for the advice though! I'm excited to get this going.
Subtletanks91
I usually always. It's the bullet and go all out lol. But money is tight you do what you got to do
Mikeyp85
Haha. I'm also very impatient when it comes to waiting for stuff so I'd have no fingernails left if I had to wait for a package from china!
Subtletanks91
True very true. Lol I ordered a Bml on Saturday night and have to wait two weeks for it. I'm already pounding my head on the freaking wall.
ctaylor3737
I'll have to check, these out. Never seen such a thing lol -Chris
featherblue
Ive used the finex brand for separating shrimp several times. Even the smaller grate size let even sub adult shrimp thru. I ended up putting the grate inside the toe of a nylon and rubber banding it super tight so I could get good water flow and keep the shrimp I wanted in the box
Mikeyp85
Feather, did you use their powerhead? .The plumbing on this thing did not make sense to me. Was not happy during the 2 hours I was tryin to figure out a way to hook this thing up to the powerhead while still being able to suction cup the thing to the glass.. Still haven't figured it out. featherblue
I used the airline option when I put the breeder box on my shrimp tanks. Even the 35gph pump with a spray bar was a lot of current for my shrimp. I use the pump version as a refugium on my reef.
Mikeyp85
Ah gotcha. Didn't go that route cuz I read that it was loud. But I think the plumbing was meant more for the air pump. Thanks!
featherblue
Air pump driven box was no louder than a bubble wand. Made a gentle, quite bubble brook noise
wicca32
with the marina box you can hook the hagen elite mini internal filter to it. the out flow for the filter fits perfect onto the inlet tube of the breeder box. and the filter is adjustable. i used it that way when i had angel fry in it
Mikeyp85
Hmm I have an elite mini.. Gotta try that!
Subtletanks91
I made one of these not to long ago and worked well but it definatly need some tweaking. Here is the link guys. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/showthread.php?t=389273&highlight=breeder+box
wicca32
that is quite nifty. i know on the sponge filter i am using im not a big fan of the noise it makes i just stuck poly fill in it and that helped quiet the outlow of it and works just the same. i didnt stuff it all the way down the tube just the opening where water goes back into the tank i will get a pic later if you want to see
Subtletanks91
Thanks:) I would like to see it always gives me more ideas for a diy project and whatnot.
Mikeyp85
Cool stuff..I just rigged mine up! Using the power head cuz it's smaller than the elite mini and all I needed was one to those eheim elbow thingies to make the 90 degree turn to the power head. Had to improvise a bit and cut some eheim tubing to make it all work.
Soothing Shrimp
have a pic of it, Mikey?
Mikeyp85
I can take one and put it up a little later. I basically had to cut 2 inches off an eheim hose so I could connect the elbow piece to the inflow pipe. Otherwise I would never be able to connect the two. They were the same diameter. Then the power head came with a rubber adapter which happened to fit perfectly on the other side of the elbow. I did this bc i wanted to utilize the suction cups on the power head , which you cannot do without that elbow piece. I've seen pics of people just dangling the power head in the water. Looks horrible..
Soothing Shrimp
Please do post pics when you have a chance, my friend. Sounds like a great rig-up!
Mikeyp85
Thanks bud.. Will do!
Mikeyp85
The green part is the modification. an eheim elbow piece and a 2 inch cut tubing. The downward view shot just shows the layout. All I'd have to do is suction the power head and fit it onto that black Good stuff!!
