GLA 17G Shrimps Tank

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I'd like to share my first journal in this forum. It is also my first bee shrimps tank. I love aquascaping and I love shrimps...so I really want to make the tank as natural as possible.

Tank specs:

Rimless GLA 17G (old model) - 24x12x14in

Filters: Eheim 2213 (matrix, substrat pro), Boyu (full 1L de-nitrate), dual sponge filter with air pump, UGF (not running, just for water change)

Substrate: 9L ADA Aquasoil , Lowkey Speed Sand (for initial setup)

Lighting: Current CFL, also Finnex Planted Plus available to switch

Let started with how I set up and cycle the tank:

Got everything needed for my bee shrimps tank:

Assemble the UGF and eheim filter in place

Spread 1/4 bag of Lowkey Speed Sand evenly in the tank, not on the UGF:

Pour half bag of ADA Aquasoil in:

Again, spread 1/4 bag of Lowkey Speed Sand evenly on top of the substrate, the other half bag will be used for later or water change if needed:

Finish pouring the left over substrate, spread out evenly, I created a little depth for the scape I'm going with:

Teaser: fill up the tank using tap water and let it soak for 24 hours:

Thank you!

After soaking for 24 hours, the water got pretty clear:

But I did a complete 100% water change with RO water, slowly fill it up and the water is crystal clear:

Now to speed up the cycle time, and since ADA leak lot of ammonia in the water, this is what I use:

EF901B60-9A9E-4DB9-988D-9715E7AC4674_zps

Got my scape in, don't know why the driftwood takes too long to sink, I'd been boiling and soaking them for 2 weeks. So I got to put some rocks on to keep it down. Once they sink completely, I'll remove the rocks :)

Now all the filters are running and I love how clear the water is. I also got a SS Skimmer runs on the left side to remove all the dirts on the surface.

This is the scape I come up at first with the driftwood but decide to move it more to the right so the shrimps will have more spaces to come out for food and toys.

After almost 3 weeks of set up and maintenance, seems like my tank are getting close to the cycle point:

NO3 test - Left is this tank, right is from my high-tech planted tank

Junglefowl-

Have you had experience using the API or Hagen aquarium test kits? I see that your brand is sera, which I haven't been aware of. If you've used different brands before which is your favorite and how would they compare?

I haven't use Hagen...but API test kit. Both API and Sera give very accuracy result for me. One thing that I don't like about the Sera NO3 test is I have to go through 4 steps process to have the result...API only needs 2 bottles. Can compare to one and another but I support the API brand (made in USA)!

Planting are still in process but I got a batch of golden shrimps with golden back to try on. The PH is stay around 6 so not ideal for the shrimps. Once I settle with my bee shrimps, I'll move these neos to a different tank

Gotta love those yellow neos! Do you have any experiences keeping them in a low PH tank?

Shrimps are doing great. First day I saw a berried female was 02/01 so I'm expecting to see the baby all around pretty soon. I have 5 of them carrying eggs now and they're all CBS.

In the mean time, enjoy the buce flower :):

How are the bee balls doing for you? I have been debating on getting them, but cant seem to decide. Not much info on it

It really does the job. It realeases mineral into the tank that raise TDS (not quite a lot) so I still can use SS GH+ together with it. More info can be found on their website:

http://www.borneowild.com/pp_mineral.php

I also use Lian breeding stones (new product in the US from Korea) that I got it from oversea that helps in breeding and survival of babies.
