TomCruise
I was wondering how people control algae growth in their tanks? CO2, fish, snails etc? I have some BB and green hair algae and am wondering what the best method for controlling it would be.
chibikaie
I've been using rooibos tea with pretty good results against hair algae.

chibikaie
I don't know but it turned it white in a day. I made tea and poured some in to get a golden color. It has tannins, and it may lower KH.
Shrimple minded
Chib, would you be so kind as to give your recipe for making rooibos tea? From where did you source your rooibos?

chibikaie
Ummm, I just get a box of tea bags from the supermarket, make a cup of tea, and pour it in until it looks right? I use a cup for a 20 gallon tank at the moment, and I'm down to dosing at biweekly water changes. It had to be daily at first. I don't recall ever reading that it's *not* shrimp safe, but those of you with very delicate shrimp may want to experiment with culls before dropping it in with very expensive livestock. I've been mainly using it with fish and snails, so I can't attest to safety with shrimp.
sarah
Before you start adding things - What kind of lights are you using, and for how long each day? Is your tank near a window? And are you dosing ferts for your plants? gillznglass
Shrimple minded
Chib, I'm assuming you use RO water, yes?
chibikaie
For a shrimp tank I would, yes. Sarah makes a good point. Algae are best tackled by making sure conditions are ideal for plants.
