vinniemabuna Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 Hi,I have a 20 gallon tank with mostly Sakura and some fire red shrimp in it. What is the best time to cull my 10 percent that are regular red cherry shrimp at what size. My 100 or so reds are a mix gene pool from different breeders, thank you for any help Quote
Shrimple minded Posted October 31, 2015 Report Posted October 31, 2015 If the other 90 are Sakura and fire red I don't see why you woundn't want to cull the 10 as soon as you can get them into the net. Quote
Soothing Shrimp Posted October 31, 2015 Report Posted October 31, 2015 While it is true that the red intensifies with age, you have enough juvies now to compare with each other's redness to cull by juvie age. Quote
sarah Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 Just make sure you can tell males from females. I recently heard of someone culling all the males in their tank, mistakenly thinking they were just poorly colored RCS. Quote
zodiac Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 oops! does the color of males matter, meaning is it all the female how good the color of the babies come out? Quote
Wygglz Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 The color of both males and females will impact the color of the babies, but males are generally not as brlliant as the females (insert jokes here). Soothing Shrimp and svetilda 2 Quote
DETAquarium Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 Usually the color intensity if most important in males, as from my understanding these are the primary genes that pass to the shrimplets. Usually when I culled my Fire Red tank, I would wait until they were juvenile to sub-adult age, prior to them being able to breed. This allows you to give the shrimp time to mature and their color to enhance. Sometimes people will have a cull tank set aside so if they cull a shrimp and the color intensifies later down the road they can move them back to the general population. Soothing Shrimp Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 From my reading and experience with neos: Cards- Males carry color Neos- Fems carry color Both will have some impact, however. Quote
