Tigers and Neos that need the least amount of culling/breed the most true?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be setting up a 180 gallon heavily planted tank. Planning on growing and selling some plants and just wanted to throw a Neo strain and Tiger strain in there that could multiply and so I could sell off those as well. Being such a large tank with tons of plant mass, it would be difficult to cull properly, so just wondering what strains tend to breed the most true so the color saturation doesn't degrade over generations. I would be adding fresh blood every so often.

If you know, or have a ball park number, mention percentages of how much they breed true (offspring grow to have same color saturation as parents).

So far I am thinking of Neon Yellow Neos and maybe Tangerine Tigers (will see how true my Royal Blues breed).

While on the topic of breeding true, how about softer, acidic water Caridinas (they would be kept in proper conditions)? Any particular ones breed the most "true" (just one grade, not varying grades)? Guess it wouldn't matter too much. Just sell them under the appropriate "grade"/pattern or sell as random scoops?

My vote is for TTs or Super Reds and Carbon/Blue rilis. No experience with tigers (yet), but with the Carbon/blue rilis I have a very low cull rate. 3 cull/about 160 offspring=~1.875% cull rate=~98.125% true breeding. I don't ship shrimp, but I got these rilis on here from Poopians. Good prices and shipping was good. Clearly the shrimp are good!

I started out with 8 TT's last fall and have 100+. It seems like every TT I see is berried. Breed like rabbits.

Nice. Im ordering some today. I where'd you get yours ?

I'm envious Vpier.  I tried TT a couple years ago and couldn't keep them alive.

Not trying to make you feel bad but I threw them in a semi-neglected overcrowded RCS/ramshorn tank with nitrates on the high end they are doing great. I do my regular 20% water change once a week but other than that I have employed the "if aint broke dont fix it" method for this tank. I also have two male bee shrimps that crawled over into this tank and are doing great. i might get some nice crosses with the TT's and bee's. I also have another tank that is pristine and they breed just the same.

Keep us up to date on your TT x bees. I'm trying the same crosses.

Happen to know the water parameters in that tank?
