I think we all do things like that. I'm sure every last member of this forum who keeps and breeds shrimp can tell stories of losses and learning experiences you are not alone at all. I'm sorry you are dealing with it, but don't let it discourage you. Learn what you can, modify as needed, and keep on.

  7. agreed! the instructions are crazy, i'd only ever use that much on a large heavily stocked tank with really good biofiltration.

  8. Depending on the amount you added to your tank, it could cause a spike in nitrates. Adding too much AE is no different than overfeeding a tank. While its a good product there is a misconception about Bacter AE in that you can add it without affecting the water quality. The instructions says to use one full spoon daily, that is way beyond too much. I only use it for starting new tanks and maybe a couple times a month if I see a lot new babies I will add a very tiny amount. As for the nitrates it could have been high and you didnt know it. You will be amazed how tough neo's can be and high nitrates will not kill immediately.

  10. It all depends on how impure your water source is. Everyone's water is different and filters will vary on usage because of it.

So sorry for your losses Ohmiko I've seen posts about shrimp health/disease before and have just decided to keep a log of common issues with resulting treatments for future reference. I'll also use it for common water issues as well so I'll have a handy reference when (not if) something happens and can respond quickly for my animals. I think other newbies would benefit from keeping one as well. I know I've seen this treatment before from Mr F and have only been on site less then a year.

  13. Thanks for your response. So do you think it has something to do with the fact that the two colors come from two different WT trees? (I don't know what WT means....) I guess though that they only show yellow colors from that one tree and if others ended up with wilds it doesn't explain things. But perhaps its just that these particular reds gene locations do not get cancelled out with the genes of the yellows (do you know what Grade AA Red Cherry matches on that chart? Is it the same as Grade A but darker or something?). The interesting thing is that all the parents died within a month or so. Each day I would wake up to find another one or two dead and was baffled. None or very few of the offspring have died and have gone on to reproduce like crazy. So if I added blue, probably nothing good would happen then right? Stocking levels wise, at one point should I see if a store will take some of them? I have about 50 in my 7g cube.

  14. Interesting you should post this. Years ago my yellows kept dying out. I bought hundreds of dollars of yellows over time, and if I looked at them funny they would drop dread. Out of desperation I crossed my yellows with reds thinking I would have to cull, but at least I would have heartier yellows. To my surprise, I wound up with yellows and reds with very few wilds. Others have tried to replicate what I did and they wind up with a majority of wilds, which leads me to believe color is located at more than one spot. Depending on the strain, color may reside at a different location. For instance red may be located at spot 1 or spot 2. Spot 1 would yield wilds when crossed because they conflict with another color, while spot 2 may be dominant over another color because it does not conflict. This is only my theory, but so far- you seem to be the only one whom has recreated my experiment. All this is under uncontrolled conditions, of course. So the best we can say is this is a theory.

  15. I have a couple of Caridina sulawesi var. bandit (Sulawesi crown shrimp “Bandit”) packages for sale (exclusively for Shrimp Spot members). The offer is for 15 unsexed subadults or adults + a few shrimplets (as bonus) from my main breeding colony (no culls) as seen in the pictures and youtube video below for US$160, including USPS Priority Shipping, in the continental USA. I have been selectively breeding this line for about four years and offer it for the first time for sale. My goals were to increase the black and white coverage and I also selected for the banded (bandit) phenotype. As for neos, the females show more intense colors. Caridina sulawesi are very prolific and hardy shrimps. I have kept them at pH ranging from 6.2 – 8.5. The shrimps that I have for sale were kept at pH 6.8, KH = 2-3 and GH = 5-6. The colors and patterns are more intense at acidic pH. I don’t recommend a KH below 1. It is unlikely that they will interbreed with any common aquarium shrimp species. DOA is covered (excluding shipping costs) when the shipment is accepted upon the first delivery attempt, a clear picture of the dead shrimps inside the originally closed bag is sent and the claim is emailed no later than 2 hours after delivery. I can ship on September, 12., or September, 13. 2016. 16. Hello, I am new to the forum. About 5 months ago I purchased a couple batches of neocaridina davidi shrimp from two different sources. The first were Grade AA Red Cherry shrimp from The Shrimp Farm. I don't see that grade on the WT lineage chart so maybe just a difference in naming? Are they sakura? I also purchased another dozen of Neon Yellow from Aquatic Arts. These were said they have the goldenback gene and true enough their offspring have brilliant golden stripes down their backs. I was told they would revert to wild or orange? I know nothing of genetics so any information you can give me would be great! After 5 months there have been at least two or three? generations born. The funny thing is for the most part their colors have stayed true. I have lots of neon yellows with the goldenback and many dark red shrimp. I have a couple that appear washed out more like a standard cherry shrimp. Can you explain why this would be and what I should expect? In looking at the lineage chart the yellows and reds come from a different neocaridina line? Anyways, should I expect this to continue with their colors? Are they not interbreeding or is it that one gene is dominant over others? What would happen if I added in saphire blues? My last question is I have about 50 right now in my 7g cube (along with 5 endlers), is that too many shrimp? They are fun to watch.

  17. Hey guys, I'm currently in the process of cycling my new 20 gallon long tank and I'm having a lot of trouble deciding which type of shrimp will be have the most success in my tank. Here's my current setup I'm using Fluval Shrimp stratum, a corner HMF from Swiss Tropicals, I have some cholla and drift wood, a ton of Java moss and other plants from my LFS, mineral rocks Indian almond leaves and some Malaysian trumpet snails. PH is 6.7. Im currently interested in some pandas but I'm curious if I'll have more success with crystal reds or possibly some other kind. Any suggestions for my what kind of shrimp to get that will thrive in this tank or any suggestions for the tank itself would be greatly appreciated!!

  18. aoc = any other color " Generally you're saying when you mix colors you will end up with wild coloring eventually? " Yepper. "Oh yeah, what is an acceptable stocking per gallon with neocaridina?" As many as your filtration can keep up with. Not unusual to have 100+ or more in a 10g.

  19. Just remember, experiments are fun- but you may want to use a different tank so you don't wind up destroying any stock you have.

  20. I figured the pesticides could be removed along with the peel, but I just read that some pesticides could be systemic which is surprising. I guess I will stick to the organics and buy when they are on sale or at the farmer's market when I have the time and freeze the rest.

  21. Funny! My yellows diminished too! I only have males now so I just purchased 10 females to see how that ends up! Maybe I'll introduce Sakura red from my LFS been dying to get those since $2 each is so tempting!!! Ravishing red

  22. Oh, AA just is a grade of saturation of color. It's not used too much in the US, and when it is- it is often misused. Don't worry about that too much. ;-)

  24. Okay, a seriously negative sounding title...but it did get your attention, right? And this IS kind of a serious topic! Yet, I will punctuate it with a little touch of sarcasm...Of course! People ask me if anything about our business keeps me awake at night. Other than shipments being lost, and the other usual minutiae of running any business, I'd have to say that the possibility of someone "nuking" their tank is the one thing I worry about most. We've been working with botanicals for a few years now, and offering them to customers for just over a year now (can you believe that?), and with an ever-growing global customer base, the possibility of someone screwing up big-time and killing all of their fishes because they didn't follow our instructions is more of a possibility than before, I'm afraid..You know, it's kind of a "numbers" game, I suppose... Surpisingly, we've only had maybe one or two incidents of someone having a serious problem, and they were both caused by the aquarist failing to heed our advice about preparation and adding materials slowly to an established aquarium... Bacterial for sure. I've had success in treatment and minimal losses with the following. 1. 4 days of 1/2 dose Maracyn 2 or Tetracycline (antibiotic to treat the infection). 2. 3/4 dose Melafix during antibiotic treatment (tea tree oil to prevent infection spread). 3. Dr. Tim's Eco-Balance before and after antibiotic treatment (beneficial bacteria to fight infection and preserve biofiltration).

  28. OK, I've almost finished transfering shrimp from my old 5g with Amazonia to new 5g with Brightwell. (I still have some small babies in the old tank and need to transfer my horned nerites somewhere - they love a piece of wood I kept in there, so they're going in some of the new coming tanks with the wood). The old tank looked like jungle... It's how the new tank looks. It's as empty as I could go. (The moss on the cholla will be replaced with xmass moss. Hornwort - I just grow pieces of what my goldfish broke.) So, mostly it's mini pelia now... I had 3 berried females (neo , mischling and black panda) and all of them are still berried.

When we had a bacterial infection in our system (8 tanks all interconnected) we treated them with antibiotics. Kanaplex is one, but we've also used a feed by Borneo Wild. It is a common issue with many threads posted about them. You might want to search for bacterial treatments. Others will probably chime in as well, but yes, other shrimp can catch it, and yes, it is treatable however, don't be surprised if you lose some stock to it.

    Neo chart clarification?

Is It just me or is this shrimp hobby one gigantic, world wide, weird science project? From shrimp colours and names, to the same type shrimp living in water parameters at opposite ends of the scale. Yet, I'm still not scared off raising these critters.

    KH, and more

I used to use baking soda for my red card project. It would raise and hold the ph for about 3 weeks then the ph would slowly drop again. Some things to know though- I had a 10g tank, worked with tiny measuring spoons (equivalent perhaps to hand pinches,) and was only bringing my ph up about .3 So, your results may differ from mine.

  37. As you progress in the hobby, does it always mean that you can't appreciate the simple, basic things that were so amazing to you when you were a complete beginner? I think the short and sweet answer is "No!" Seems like no matter how far we progress in the tropical fish hobby, we're still easily engrossed by simple, seemingly "basic" fish stuff. Yet, of course, we can't help but bring our experience and "advanced" tastes to the whole experience. We seem to have trouble viewing things through a beginner's eyes. What do I mean? Here are just a few examples: (click to read more)

You could add a single Nerite snail. They only grow between 1/2" to an inch, and keep the glass free of algae.

  40. For me, tank philosophy depends on your goals. For me, the top goal is to keep both shrimp and plants healthy and thriving. It's the balance of fertilizing the plants vs best fertility of shrimp. They seem to be contrary goals to me, which brings the fun of balancing. I like the ecosystem. Others are building a breed (or several). Others want the most beautiful environment in their tanks. Others are trying to maximize baby quality, output and health to make profit. Sparse tanks makes for easier culling but less tank beauty.

  41. You're right, I worded that wrong. I bought the Shrimp Nature Health Spray for the bacteria infection and added the Werwa because it says it increases the vitality of the aquarium and helps improve water quality, plus what you mentioned. So I figured and couldn't hurt and sounded like a good supplement.

  49. I won the Buypetshrimp.com ROAK for 10 tangerine tigers. Erik was super kind and offered local pickup instead of shipping since I live relatively close by to him. I also purchased a few blue OEBTs and he gave me some freebie blondes too. I also got a sample of the food he sells. So far my shrimps love the Ultra Supple food. The shrimp acclimated really well and are looking happy in my tanks. Thanks Erik! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
